As tank armor advanced throughout history, it’s always been countered by something that not only disables the tank but is also easily portable. It’s not just a recent thing? We haven’t seen many cutting edge models of tanks in production excluding the AbramsX because they’re mostly pointless considering the direction modern warfare is heading in where you can just launch unmanned drones from relative safety.
There's also an upper limit on how much energy a regular person can fire without injuring themselves with the reaction of launching a shot from conventional firearms, so its a game of efficiency being played with how effectively you can accelerate and decelerate a projectile. The armour wants to be as effective at stopping a projectile as a gun barrel is at launching it. At least against human-fired stuff.
But then, if you face power-armoured opponents, the power of what projectile they can fire without injury also increases.
could it compete against an armada of chimera's on auger's that's what I wanna know. :P
Tanks will remain faster and carry heavier armour and weaponry, though it's possible that weapons like the fat man launcher could bridge the gap in raw destructive power.
