Things to keep in mind:
if you want to just stick with what Bethesda mods and CC stuff they host by fans found in the menu, I'd still suggest looking online for any commentary about them. Some may be broken with the current version of the game, or just not do what you want them to. They will be the same simple install as the console version.
if you want to go for more adventurous and sophisticated, and a vast number *more* than that... :) The nexusmods site is the main location, and while there are other sites, they have a safe reputation and are able to show you things that might not be found on other pages - such as comments, bug reports and dates of replies, and the like. You should make an account - it's free, and makes having a download history possible. VERY important sometimes!
You will probably need to use a MOD ORGANIZER program. There are several, and everyone who uses one over another will always tell ya 'theirs is the best' but it's always up to you the user to decide which one does what you want in the format that you like it to.
-- Mod Organizer 2
-- Vortex
-- Nexus Mod Manager / Community Edition
Those are the three main ones, yes there might be more niche or specific ones available but those are much more widely used.
You will want to read their installation instructions and make sure that what you need is present in the right place on your hard drive along with the game.
Also with those, LOOT is a very good program that will aid you in setting up your load order and checking to see whether there's a mod with built-in problems or requires something else that isn't installed yet. I believe at least one of them comes with it, but I always recommend downloading them all *separately* from the website, in order to make sure of what YOU know you're putting on your computer.
Then to launch your modded game, you may see "Requires F4SE" - a lot of the best ones will use that, and you will want to go to silverlock.org or on the nexusmods site as both of those have the current version. The site also has a list of older archived versions for past editions of the game as it has updated slowly over the years.
F4SE has very clear and easily followed instructions in the README file. However I do recommend downloading the ZIP file rather than using their on-site installer, but again your mileage might vary.
---
Once you know that your organizer and launcher are installed, you should be *careful* about what all you put on your game.
Read EVERYTHING you can about the mods you're using. Some may require base mods while others are incompatible. Some may not be compatible with the current edition of the game, but nexus has tags for "works with next-gen" which should be easily visible.
don't overload your pc version, it's fragile enough as it is vanilla. I strongly recommend against "collections" because if you're blindly downloading 80 odd small mods, when one of them is broken, you'll still have to do the leg work to figure out which of them has busted... so be slow and steady for it.
Ok nice. Im getting my mods from nexus. I'm getting Halo mods. Saw a video and thought it'd be fun. Also could make a good gold mine for content. Win win.
I just didnt know what the next step was. I didn't think fallout 4 modding would be so....complicated. I'm even at the CRP server and their installation looks complicated
Next Gen Creation Kit is different in various ways to Last Gen Creation Kit, you will need to read up on it.

Need...
Mod Organizer 2... more efficient at handling mods, make a separate instance for just Mod Organizer 2. With it's own Overwrite Folder...
Folders for Mod Organizer... Mod Organizer 2 is the first folder, all the rest are inside of it. You will need to set up the new folders, linking them, when Mod Organizer 2 is running.

- Watch lots of Youtube Tutorials
- Start by changing small things on mods at first.
- Always keep your Plugins the same name
- Have Version Numbers for your mod, on the Main Folder, and Zip File name
- Download mods, and see how other people make mods, file structure, names, updates. Try tweaking those...
Something of note on the Nexus is the REQUIREMENTS tab.
CRP requires:
Nexus requirements Mod name Notes
Previsibines Repair Pack Stable Branch - PRP Version 74.12 > PPF.esm and PRP.esp both required
Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch - UFO4P version 2.1.5
Off-site requirements Mod name Notes
CRP Overgrowth See xxxx channel
I'm assuming you are talking about a discord for this, but you will need those other two things: Previsbines Repair Pack, AND the Unofficial Fallout patch, as well as that Overgrowth mod itself.
That's a lot of stuff that isn't easily packed away in one small place, and more than that you should be aware that it will not work with a lot of other mods that may affect areas where they've placed items.

Yes:
HAVE STEAM RUNNING. That's first and foremost.
Put the F4SE shortcut as it tells you to, linked to the right file in the right folder. Place that shortcut on your desktop and use it to start the game instead of the Steam play button.
Launching the PLAY button version of it will NOT load many mods, because anything you have that *requires* f4se must actually be using f4se. It's a program that basically wiggles around the code, that the normal play button cannot allow for.
Launching the F4SE *without having Steam running* will force it to open Steam - and will only then, idiotically, launch the normal play executable and not the script editor with mods. It's quite frustrating when you have the large mod list that some of us do :D
yeah I decided im not modding fallout 4. I gave up on installing CRP cause it's too confusing and difficult (pissed off a guy in the server. I'm apparently making this harder than it needs to be even though it's actually difficult) so I decided to stick with the mods I was going to play with.
One mod requires ten others for patches and hard requirements, I open them in new tabs so I can download them. The first mod requirement tells me I need three more mods for it to work. So I open THOSE in tabs so I can download them too. I download the file, go to the next tab and click download and then it tells me it needs EIGHT more files required to run, so I open those in tabs, download the file and next tab, then THAT mod tells me I need TWELVE MORE FILES TO RUN!!!!
Why do I need over FIFTY MODS just to run one?! And that one mod requires more mods which require more mods and those mods require triple the mods just to run the one.
This is INSANE!!!!!! WHY DO I NEED TWELVES MODS JUST TO RUN ONE THAT'S USED FOR A PATCH?!?!?!?!?!
Who is crazy enough to make all these things separated anyway?! All I wanted to do was download the halo spartan armor mod and just to run it it has me on this wild goose chase when every mod it requires to run has its own required files and the list got longer and longer with each one!
You have to be INSANE to put yourself up to this! Like what insane SOB thought this was a good idea to make the requirements TWELVE SEPARATE FILES just to run ONE?!
This ♥♥♥♥♥ insane.
Never in my life have I seen a game this overly complicated to mod.
I would suggest: Be patient with yourself and your game!
Modding IS complex, I am never going to say it isn't. I remember being absolutely gobsmacked back in the early years of how hard it was to get rolling. But it is SO very rewarding once you understand the basics.
Start smaller! Start with one or two *simple* and *individual* texture replacements. Rather than one that *literally* replaces the whole map with their own remade resources. There are thousands of different things to look at, I know the site has a lot going on. But maybe pick a single thing, like "trees", and go with one replacement mod. Put it in your game, see if it runs.
Lather, rinse, repeat.
CRP is a massive mod that is definitely NOT user-friendly nor beginner-friendly.
its worth the frustration
