Isometric RPG's are Dead! Long live the FPS new flesh!
So glad Fallout 4 is following the successful formula of the reboot.

I was pretty concerned that as a sop to a tiny minority of middle aged gamers that they'd go backwards and make the game a retro isometric RPG, like the older games in the series.

Really pleased to see both the trailer and the E3 presentation and see that they've copied Doom and kept the game FPS (with optional 3rd person view).

CANNOT WAIT for this game!

Agreed. There are other isometric games recently released that cater to the nostalgic bunch. 3 different games come to mind right away.

There's really no REAL fallout feel in the reboots, you don't need to strategically think of what you're going to do in the new ones... FO3 especially since you can get infinite stims and 5.56 ammo from casdin just by giving him laser/plasma weapons or enclave armor. Makes the game lose it's touch when you have 600 stims and 10k rounds of ammo and can use both as much as you want without consequence.
Lol then buy WasteLand 2 or the old fallouts and quit ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

That's not really an opposing point to what i pointed out. Wanna try again?

Again, people seem to not know what isometric means in terms of video game graphics. In short, it's a method of faking 3D environments. Though, technically in ye olde Fallout's case it's trimetric projection.

The major reason isometric projection died down was because true 3D graphics made it obsolete!
This person gets it. Very few people seem to understand that isometric games are 2D; Xcom, Divinity:OS, Wasteland 2, and Diablo 3 are all 3D.

Actually you're both wrong, Isometric is a a way to make it so everything has equal dimensions.

Isometric projection is a method for visually representing three-dimensional objects in two dimensions in technical and engineering drawings

It's not "equal dimensions", it's that the angles are all the same. Doesn't change the fact that the purpose of it is to draw a 3D object on a 2D plane. (The whole shebang is referred to as axonometric projection. The type involves the angles used.)

As I said, Fallout 1 and 2 technically aren't isometric either. (They are trimetric). But that's nitpicky.

I don't think they are dead for say, but I like the new Fallouts. And besides if Bethesda made the new fallout isometric than all of the diehard fans of the originals would hate it because something wasn't like the original.

I can't believe this wasn't said earlier and that I didn't say it
There's nothing wrong with turn based 2D isometric games, but... they're a very tiny niche market, and you're probably never going to see a AAA isometric game ever again. But it's not just the graphics. That style of game also tends to lack stuff like immersion (needs, non-combat related crafting, etc), a fleshed out world beyond the settlements and dungeons, character rather than story focus, etc. A classic 2D game *could* have this stuff, but they tend not to because it's just not their style.

A recent turn based 2D isometric game was Pillars of Eternity. I haven't played it yet, but I've seen parts of the gameplay, and it looks like it's in the same mold. Your viewpoint never changes, you can't rotate the world around you. Like every other 2D/Iso game, it's really hard to tell the characters apart because they're so small on the screen. And worst of all, it felt like a choose-your-own-adventure book. It made a splash on release, but nearly silence since then, because it's a niche market.

It's a style of game that's unfortunately stuck in the past. I would love to see a turn based 2D isometric game that was not afraid to think outside the D&D clone box. I would love to see it because sometimes you just want to slow stuff down and think it through instead of running a mad dash through a firefight. The original FO3 VATS was a nice nod to those without great mouse dexterity, but it looks like the NEW VATS is going to be bullet time instead.

First person RPGs aren't new. They have been around just as long as top down/iso rpgs.

the old ones didnt really need strategy the first and best option in all cases is to follow the way of boo and aim for the eyes and its not like stims were hard to get a combate shotgun could buy like 12 of them in a trade and you could farm those in the third town ammo was pretty common too unless you just used the gauss rifle
