[ RESOLVED ] Help! my 100 hour save disappeared!
My save disappeared, I was playing normally yesterday, I woke up this morning and my save was no longer there, just the option to start a new game, I believe my game was being saved on Steam Cloud, but I don't know how to access the files and documents , this is my first PC, and I've only had it for a month, so I'm still learning, I investigated a little in the documents and found a ´´saves´´ folder, when I open it there is a document called steam_autocloud.vdf, this would be mine save? and how do I restore it? I already have 100 hours on my character and I don't want to lose it. sorry for bad english.

it was my understanding steam cloud moved/synched files from where the game creates save files - either Documents or the default steam\userdata folder

I turned steam cloud on this morning and synched the saves. I do NOT have One Drive turned on. all my saves are still in
Documents\My Games\Fallout4\Saves
and in the steam cloud

I have
steam\userdata\mysteamid\377160
but the folder is empty

you have
c:\program files (x86)\steam\userdata\yoursteamid\377160\ac\winmydocuments\my games\fallout4\saves

I have no idea what that is but your save may be in there.

and I see a lot of c:\users\yourwindowsid\OneDrive\Documents entries
your save may be in there also.

perhaps turn One Drive and steam cloud off until you find your saves.
move the saves back to the Documents\My Games\Fallout4\Saves folder
make a copy and store them somewhere safe.
turn steam cloud back on so that it synchronizes your Saves folder.

disable One Drive. or it you must use it for something, add exclusion for the Documents\My Games\Fallout4 folder

Your save games should be in your C:\Users\yourusername\Documents\My Games\Fallout4\Saves folder. If they are not that is not a good sign.

Generally don't use steam cloud on a bethesda game. Don't rely on quicksaves or autosaves. Do manual saves and do them often.

I'm looking a little more, it seems that my save is in my documents, but it doesn't appear when I open the game.

I go to documents>my games>fallout>saves
and then there is just one file called steam_autocloud.vdf
After that I don't know what to do.

there is just one file called steam_autocloud.vdf, this is my save? If so, how do I make it appear in my game again?

Well, apparently Fallout is not saved there, it only showed other games... does this mean that my save was lost forever? thanks for the help.

that is where ALL your cloud files are stored.

have another account?

check the cloud_log.txt and cloud_log.previous.txt files in folder
...\steam\logs

it is possible to turn ON steam cloud for all games and turn it OFF for an individual game.
perhaps check game cloud game settings.

using windows one drive? look in the one drive folders

Thank you for helping, I looked here and steam cloud is activated in fallout, but showing that I didn't use any of the space, as I said, it seems that everything that was supposed to be there simply disappeared, and I don't use another account, I looked at my one drive, I did the basic process

documents>mygames>fallout4>saves

and all there is is ´´steam_autocloud``

I don't know where it could be anymore... just to make sure I'm not letting it go unnoticed, how is the save file written?

You should not be using steam cloud for fallout or basically any game that has hundred-hour playthroughs.

Turn it off, restart steam, and see if your game properly loads. your saves should all be locally stored in addition to being on the cloud.

Also make sure that if your computer has it, that ONEDRIVE is turned OFF for those folders, as it will move or change files in a way that steam and the game systems cannot locate them even if they exist at all after compression from it.

Thanks for the advice, like I said, I'm kind of new to all this and I'm still learning, I disabled Steam Cloud from Fallout, and I disabled OneDrive, I don't know if I'll ever be able to recover my save, but I'll keep trying what I can

one drive moves files out of the documents folder. check the one drive folder for your save.

the cloud log files should tell you if something was uploaded/downloaded/synched
or not.

your game cloud folder is empty so does the log say it uploaded save files or not?
does the game create save files now?
does the steam cloud upload the saves now?

I made a new save to see if everything was working normally, Steam Cloud is saving it now
https://prnt.sc/T_voSTds
and it seems that even Onedrive is saving too
https://prnt.sc/rMQq7A

but this is all with the new save, the old one didn't come back or anything like that, if you could help me more directly, we could talk on discord, and I would share my screen, I would be very grateful, but if that's too much to ask, that's fine.

Don't do discord things with anyone even well meaning ones from Steam just so you know that is how a LOT of people lose their steam accounts to phishing.

Like said above several times:

Turn OFF steam cloud for this game.

Turn OFF Onedrive at least from scanning steam and any game folders. You will continue to run into issues with both of these things in the future if they're on.

your 100 hr save file should be listed somewhere in the cloud_log.txt or cloud_log.previous.txt files.

should say it was uploaded, synched, deleted, something

my steam cloud is turned OFF but the log still has entries of what it would do if steam cloud was turned on

maybe search your drives for .fos files. recycle bin also

I found the files you mentioned, (cloud_log and cloud_log.previous) what should I do now?
cheshirm Nov 20, 2023 @ 1:51am
hopefully the file you are looking for is in one of them and the log tells you what steam cloud did with the file - upload/download/synch or it was deleted. and when.

maybe it was never uploaded. if the file was deleted locally then when the cloud checked it synched the folders deleting the cloud copy

fallout 4 entries are AppID 377160

think these are files being deleted from the cloud
[2023-11-19 19:19:49] [AppID 377160] Need to forget file
MyGames/Fallout4/Saves/Save234_00000000_596E6772696B_Commonwealth_061303_20230313014305_66_2.fos

and these need to be uploaded into the cloud
[2023-11-19 19:19:49] [AppID 377160] Need to upload file
My Games/Fallout4/Saves/level74.fos

and these are files that are the same in the cloud and on the disk
[2023-11-19 19:19:49] [AppID 377160] File is in sync
