Also, https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/15639 works for enabling mods. But you need the script extender installed to use it ( as with most mods. "F4SE", most recent version ). It is a bit of work to get mods set up, but Mod Organizer 2 does a good job of managing that and can quick launch the game with F4SE once it's installed. ( Bonus, that bypasses the Bathesda launcher )
Many others prefer mods though. I would recommend the unofficial patch as a first step. If you want to take a look at the nexus for mods, I would also recommend setting "Endorsements" for the search, that way it will show you the mods that most people use and enjoy. The first 3 pages of mods will be some of the most important ones.
I have had very enjoyable play throughs both with and without mods. I started the game without mods, then started using mods, then felt like I had lost my bearings on what the game was “supposed to be” and went back to playing without mods for a LONG time. Now I play a mix - sometimes without any mods, sometimes with a few carefully selected mods, or an overhaul package.
It is not perfect, nothing is. But it's safe to run without any mod at all.
Mods aren't supposed to fix a game, just enhance it. Unfortunately that has become obfuscated over the years, especially with Bethesda's laziness, and some things do need fixing. I mostly have mods to remove silly `hand-holding`.
But you can still play without a mod.
None of the bugs that exist are game killers (unless you really lose the silicon lottery )
But looking back I wish I had at least a couple of basic mods in there to make my first playthrough, which IMO is the most important one, even more immersive:
"Atomic World" , which adds a lot of extra locations, well balanced, looks they were part of the vanilla game, I wish the game would have shipped like this because otherwise locations are a bit sparse.

and
"Another pine tree mod". Fixes the too sparse vegetation of the vanilla game. In the absence of industrial logging for 200+ years the Commonwealth should be overrun with trees by now.
"A forest" is broadly similar, but even more dense.

(Though all extra content should always be optional!)
If that had been the case I probably would have been willing to update to .984. That and if they hadn't messed up the new 21:9 monitor settings in .984
i would consider using a mods, and if it doesn't require a 3rd party app then I would
Yes you can install mods manually into the game files.
but we all recommend a mod organizer because for anyone but power users its easy to make a mistake .
I personally use Vortex, which may be downloaded here:

The more complex mods like those that need F4SE need some kind of 3rd party launcher/manager.
You don't need mods, but after you beat the game you might consider another playthrough and at that point consider modding the game to customize your playthrough.
