Far Harbor Before or After Main Story?
As the title says. is the FH story meant to be played before resolving the main story in the base game, or after?

when-ever, it's recommended, u wait till a fairly high level, but not necessary, there is no real set order.. The NPC's r considerably tougher in FH, so good weapons a must....

Might be worth waiting just for the extra dialogue
I'm in a set of fully specced X02 Power Armor and rocking an explosive combat shotgun with Spray & Pray as backup, all relevant perks. I think I have the horsepower to do it, I mostly just wondered what order made the most sense story wise.

Dont go thru FH too OP.
takes way a bit of the atmosphere IMHO.

I have gone through FH at relatively low level and without PA before just to see how it feels.
Andf it feels, more immersive.
Only real requirement is level 50 and all the ghoul perks.. or you can do the Way of the Power Armor and only leave the PA to in a hazmat suit, which magically works against gamma radiation.
The rads are not so bad. I’m doing it right now with just a gas mask and my blue underwear.
To the OP question, historically it was supposed to be done after the main quest - but I would say do it soon after. Don’t be too OP. Keep it real.

This is the answer. Nick is supposed to initiate the quest after you've finished the main quest. That's the INTENDED design, for reasons obvious to anyone who knows the quest.
Yup. And it is all round the most enjoyable way to do it.
Far harbour is doable at any level, and story wise doesn't have a fixed time frame.
You can do it before or after the ending scene and it makes sense.

The radiation in Far Harbour isn't that bad, but it is near constant so you will need anti radiation meds and equipment (meds can be bought there so....) It's more of an annoyance then an hindrance -but very scenic and mood setting!

Gear wise: its more tailored for a the "mid game" meaning levels 15 to 25. Before that and the mobs can be challenging... after that, the gear is mediocre in terms of performance.
It's best to play in release order, then in Far Harbor there's an RPG option that could affect the gameplay. Bring us Nick too..

It's the first time the character would feel the find my child pressure gone.

Kid.... yes.....

Its been 842 days since I left the vault, might as well make an attempt..

the assault marine armor is one of the best armor sets in the game (except for power armor of course). as for the dlc weapons it's entirely based on your build.

even if you don't have the science perk to upgrade store bought marine armor you can still acquire a complete assault marine armor set via quest or the legendary pieces off various merchants.

Id say wait till you don't feel the urgency of the main quest anymore (first you need to find your son...)
