Make a manual save and remember where / when it was, and try it. if things break, revert to the save and avoid the mission?

That was ages ago. They are fine. I've just finished that quest myself.

Did they ever fix the 40mm nuka grenade ammunition having no in-game source?

It makes one of the possible mission rewards much less appealing than it appears at first glance when you realize it's unusable in that form.

You can buy the 40 MM ammo here and there. Carla has some on rare occasions, A guy called Suggs sells some, and there are others. So it can be bought. I think you can even rarely find it as loot. I have been unable to get more than about 450 round so far, however.

But do you mean 40mm frag grenades or 40mm nuka grenades?

The 40mm frag grenades were certainly available, it was the nuka ones that were missing.

Still missing. I've never seen them for sale anywhere in game.

Most stuff is broken. Do it for Austin... and the XP.

Yes, I was talking about the frag grenades that are for the Chinese 40 MM weapon. Nuka grenades are very rare things to find. And the wiki says, "Nuka grenades cannot be made at any crafting bench in Fallout 4." So they're intended to be rare. I carry one Nuka grenade around just in case. I may never use it. I also carry nine ordinary frag grenades so the Nuka grenade would require some special circumstance for me to use it. All of those hand grenades weigh the same, so it's like I'm carrying 10 frags. I'd love to be able to use the Nuka grenades, but I only have a total of five of them. That'[s probably not the best way to view them.

Regular "nuka grenades" (hand grenades) do turn up rarely, but not not the "40mm nuka grenades" that the nuka variant of the 40mm grenade launcher uses.

it's just one of the creation content weapons they added. It's not a big deal. I think they include the Chinese grenade launcher in that one, which is nice to use against Hellfire and X02 power armors.

I've completed the quest several times and never had any problems.

There are many ammo types in the Makeshift Weapons Pack and other NG content that are not implemented in any player-accessible way, despite being in the NG game files. In fact there are more NG ammo types NOT implemented than ARE implemented, by far.

While it's remotely possible there was a rare outbreak of (gasp) game balance af Bethesda, the far more likely explanation is laziness and/or corner cutting.

8 months ago I was developing mods to fix all this crap. I paused in the hope Bethesda might actually release, at minimum, a bugfix for the many bugs in NG. I guess not?

It does make me wonder, back when "Grenade" was just Creation Club, before it was canonicalised, did it actually have the missing crafting recipes and/or loot table entries for these items?

By the way its not just the ammo types that are missing, its also most of the receivers. The logic seems to follow the usual (very stupid) FO4 convention of, different ammo type needs different receiver.

In fact iirc there are hints that the alternate receivers would create the different ammo types? So you would load a 40mm frag in a nuka receiver and it would turn into a 40mm nuka projectile? Maybe not, since I think you can get one GL with 40mm Nuka receiver as a unique optional quest outcome?

Anyway NG content is sloppy even by the usual standards of CC. It is way worse than most CC in terms of completeness and QA. Clearly no proper playtesting.

If you like the sounds of shattering coin causing your ears to bleed, then sure do the quest "When pigs fly"

It's one of those things handled by a particular setting of different mod parts, since you can have a part that changes the projectile to something independent of the ammunition used. It just depends whether they've used that on the given mod part.

For example, this glitch weapon fires homing missiles because the targeting computer overrides the use of the bullets that it consumes as ammunition:

Anyway yes the missing weapons was an interaction with other mods and/or was fixed within weeks in the May update-update.

Bugs that have not been fixed are multiple weapon-mod and ammo issues, and killing Suggs twice crashing the game.
