The only way to get rid of the mole rat disease (the only effect it gives you is -10 hit points) is to take the medicine you get, but that will also cause the child to die.
Those 9 points bought Sole Survivor:
- a room in the vault with a bobble head stand.
- Vault 81 people are less hateful, some even seem to like you a bit, at least for being their useful idiot.
- Curie as a companion if you want it. This gets you the opportunity to try for +10% stimpacks companion perk. Which, if you max out the medic perk, is useless (yes, I've played with 110% stimpacks)
- SS get one of his/her fusion cores back
- Austin says thanks and runs off.
- The Syringe rifle. I guess if the sleep Syringe works you can shoot the really big enemies and then use the kill 'em while they sleep perk. Never tried it cuz the real reason SS goes to vault 81 is to buy the Overseer's Guardian.
I mean, they're going to hate you if you use the cure on yourself, but they hate you anyway. You're not really losing anything, they just hate you more.I've always taken the disease and saved Austin, because I play poorly.

It is also possible to do the entire run without ever getting the disease. I have done it twice. The most recent, the run I am on now. On Very Hard. Save often and try not to rush thru it.
As others has stated, do not take a companion with you.
Saving Kent is even easier. Have a charisma of 9 or above and then tell them to attack you first before killing Kent during the conversation. Tough fight on Very Hard, but I did it on this run.
