The problem, however, is it only produces 10 ammo at a time. Fine for a sniper, not so good for automatic weapons. And absolutely terrible for miniguns. Also, DLC ammo types are not supported.
As always, mods can change this and make things better.
Eleanor - She lives in a trailer south of Diamond City near Fairlane Estates.
Leonard Elmore - Has an ammo shack near Coastal Cottage.
The biggest problem with crafting your own ammo with vanilla is chasing lead and copper shipments.
Not sure how you ran low on .45 ammo since it is the most common in the game. ZThe only time I ran short in vanilla was when I did too much stuff against mobs that do not drop ammo (ghouls, robots, Far Harbor, etc)
as i extensively use my beloved radium rifle with also uses .45 i can relate to the OP.
lead and copper however... there are a number of hardware stores and gyms around the map were you can find plenty of dumbels, fuses and the sort...
for starters... the General Atomics Galeria has a Gym and Maintenance Area were one can find that stuff.
