Combat rifle best gun type hands down
Hands down

Range, power, accuracy, decent found ammo type.

What gun comes as close to having all 3 as the combat rifle?

Every other gun has at least one weakness. Weak at range, weak up close, low power, rare ammo type.

Combat rifle is basically the gas station settlement in that it is hands down the in-game ez mode option for inexperienced player.

That's just a combat rifle that glows in the dark. :D

And you have to be Albert Einstein's smarter brother to be able mod it.

OP is right, combat rifle is the no brainer all around weapon. If I could only have one weapon (ignoring uniques/legendaries) it would have to be a combat rifle.

It's a great rifle. The OG is one rifle I try to get as early as possible. But once I can get the "The Problem Solver", it becomes my rifle I will mainly use.

Handmade, clearly. There is absolutely no shortage of ammo, regardless the fact that you cannot produce it. The traders at Nuka World have plenty to sell and you can always hunt some Nuka Raiders for it.
Not really an early game option though.

True. But, a rare occurrence, Handmade rifles do drop in the Commonwealth if you have the DLC. But no merchant sells the ammo in the Commonwealth. :P Another dumb design.
I cannot imagine how frustrating it would be to get a handmade rifle drop at L1 and know you're not going to be able to get any ammo for it until after you can run The Gauntlet into Nuka World. XD

Lol. Yeah. I have had some nice legendary Handmade weapons drop when I was not that high of a level and I had the frustrating thought. But never had one drop with a really good legendary effect, like the one The Problem Solver has.

Think how it would feel if a Two Shot Handmade Rifle dropped at say...even level 20. Not going to be able to run the Gauntlet at level 20 on Very Hard or Survival.

( Now that I have posted that, do not be surprised if someone posts, they have. :P My reaction would be to roll my eyes. )

Happened to me once. Not on level 1 but definitely below 10. Had a very decent legendary perk attached to it too. I believe that only legendaries will be dropped in the Commonwealth, before you "invite" the Nuka Raiders over.
Feeling your pain!! :D

Assault rifle is better, yes it has a bit less damage but it has less recoil and a bigger mag. You can spam fire it faster so the dps is the same or better. Laser rifle for the Honorable mention.

combat rifle is very handy in medium range.

sidearms are good for small targets in close range. shotgun is the counterpart for strong enemies in the same range.

snipers .308 and .50 cals are the best in long range.

There's a mod that adds all DLC weapon and ammo types to the Commonwealth.

I just put the Legendary from DiMA's December Child on it.

Voila, a 5.56 mm AKMoid.
