Which groups are the good guys?
BoS: Wants to hoard all technology for themselves. That's greedy and annoying as ♥♥♥.

Institute: Doesn't acknowledge the second and third generation synths becoming more than robots/androids (I wanted to be android myself just like in NV ._.)

Railroad: Lets destroy this amazing tech with huge nuke like explosion caused by making almost limitless source of energy to go wasted. Lets ignore all the amazing tech they could have had if they just took over the institution and gave the synths freedom.

Railroad is the dumb good guys, BoS is the smart neutral ones with greed and institute is full of potential but too full of themselves?

Edit: also took me 85 hours to finish the story on survival ._.

Minutemen, duh.

Minutemen, they don't really have a goal that puts others down, just to help people. But of course it's subject to opinion, for example I believe that the BoS are the "good guys".

Spoilers, obviously:

Minutemen aren't that great as well, if you decide to get their support for infiltrating the institude, you'll shoto down the BOS airship with artillerly before becoming the Wastelands main power. They start to come up with a "conquer the Commonwealth, one step at a time" attitude instead of rescuing it.

Railroad aren't so "classical good" as well. A lot of the synths they free terrorize the wasteland as raiders or worse, what you can discover during the institute quests. Actually all factions have their good and bad to them. I'm honestly struggling right now which faction i should pick in the end.

Currently, i'm making the balance act which lead to a total brodown at bunker hill with me strolling trough a free-for-all deathmatch with no one shooting me because enveryone thought my character was on their side.

They're all good guys in their own way, it also depends on perspective.

BoS hold onto technology because of people like the institute that would abuse it. They take care of the Railroad because they are messing with things they don't understand thus making the situation worse. Which is why the Brotherhood made the tactical decision to only kill the leaders to discourage rising up again instead of outright destroying all of them. Yes some decisions are questionable (because emotions cloud judgment) but they are still logical (except for one which I explain below). IMO The Brotherhood is the most leveled headed group out of all of them (except the minutemen) that actually have the best consideration for people of the commonwealth. The one thing I do struggle to understand is why the slaughter of scientist and children when you raid the institute. yes they dont outright shoot them but they detonate a bomb that kills them. (Not sure if they sent an extraction team for them though)

@Masterhummel
Maybe this will help with a decision but then again it is my opinion.

I also told everyone about the hill fight and none was my enemy. Big war, nobody even tried to shoot me.

What made me to end with Railroad was the illusion of dialog options. Some dialogs were once only and then NPC stopped to talk with me. Some dialogs could be opened as many times as wanted. And I was going to ask if Railroad could join with the institute but when the option was avaible I missclicked and my autosave/quicksave was like hour behind so I didn't want do it all over again... now institute is gone, BoS is gone, Minutemen were never more than 2 guys... and commonwealth hates me and the Railroad.

Usually the game creates two or three saves. I was able to revert most of the time.

At which point did the option to merge Institute and Railroad show up for you?

before the "Father" ordered me to kill the leader of the Railroad. I was talking with the leader of the railroad about continuing to work with Patrion and Z1

I bet it was just illusion of choise and the leader would have told me it's impossible... that's how most of my "lets not fight" coises ended with...

I guess so. But then, with a total of 14 charisma i was able to resolve a few situations like the Danse situation or the uprising inside the institute went without bloodshed for me.
