Best unarmed weapons?
So, like anyone who decided to go the unarmed route, I've been extremely disappointed in the weapon variety. Near as I can tell, boxing gloves are the worst despite being rare, knuckles are a minor step up and relatively common, and powerfists/deathclaw gauntlets are both at the tippy top and insanely rare. To add to the disappointment, powerfists are better than gauntlets while being nearly identical to begin with.

Is there anything else? Anything at all? Or is it really a complete dead end so early on?

Variety no, but the power of a good unarmed build is insane. I've done both melee and unarmed and I can put out more dps with an unarmed build overall. Even on Survival, I'm one shotting legendary deathclaws and Mirelurk Queens. (Though I need to sneak up on them.)

Have you tried the meat hooks from Far Harbor? I think there is a wounding version you can buy as well.

EDIT: Also there are 2 Legendary Quaranted Unarmed weapons (1 is from Swan[Power First] and the second is from the Deathclaw near the Museum of Witchcraft)
I wish I would not have missed your post about the best weapon in Swan's Pond.
I have just finished the game and found out about it, when killing a giant creature.
Killing it looks way easier than killing a deathclaw, which took me almost 5 mins.

Unless I am mistaken I am pretty sure Swan always drops a powerfist and it is totally possible to kill him early.
You can hide in the entrance to the vault area and he cant fit in, so you can kill him with little/no damage to yourself. I killed im at lvl 1 bc i was going for a unarmed build and the sweet sweet XP
