I have only stored items that I won't be displaying but don't want to sell yet (like cool weapons) in containers I personally made. They're always there, no one ever touches them. If you put them in the pre-existing containers in the settlement, there is a risk of you losing the item.
I like the idea of decorating, but i can never set time aside to actually do it since i dont like to do things half heartedly. If im going to decorate i need all the materials to do it in one go.
In the beginning of the game mabey about 6-8hours in i set up a few nukacolas to display on a shelf in sanctuary in the home with the power armor suit holder. In the living room the left broken bookshelf is where i liad a regular, cherry and quantam nuka colas by dropping them and manually standing them up.
I didnt know i could drop them, go into build mode and they would stand on thier own. They are on the bottom shelf, next to the bed rolls where people sleep fully within reach. Only the regular nuka cola is missing. Im at 80 hours of play and the quantam/cherry are still there. So i guess some items are safe and others arent?
It's easier to decorate if you don't try and do everything at once. So make a room and decorate just that room, then go back to questing or exploring, etc. Otherwise it gets boring/tedious.
