Placing items as decor, safe or not?
So i built my own house in Sanctuary and was wondering if anyone knows for sure if items are safe to place as decor or if they will disappear after a while. I'm not talking about storing them in containers, but placing them on display within the house I made with the "build mode" tools in-game. Thanks!

Everything you build from the construction mode is permanent.

He is talking about the tiny objects that you can pick up and use i.e. food

They wont disappear for sure, except if raiders attacks and reach those items, but also your settlers could take and use them, but then they'd remain in their inventories

Weapons and armor aren't safe laying out...the villager will take them if its better than what they have.

Ah okay, good to know about the weapons. I had some sweet looking modded weapons I was thinking about placing. What about things like cigars, lighters, etc?

Those are fine to place, wont even get stolen by raiders, not sure about settlers, but they got no reason to pick them up (I mean they also wont pick up random items, so why should they pick up items you drop?).

Also heaven forbid dogmeat walks into the room and knocks them all off the tables because for some reason he felt the need to walk over them.

If only we had these Locked Display Cases from Skyrim... I am pretty sure people would make some awesome looking houses.

Awesome, I have some cool items to display. I know this is a FPS shooter more than a true RPG but... they gave me a house and I'm going to decorate the ♥♥♥♥ out of it, dammit.

So follow up question, if an item is stored in a a container, will a settler steal it?

Never had a problem, and I have a nice showcase (stuff like .44 revolvers, missile launchers and auto-shotguns on a shelf on the wall) that hasn't been touched by anyone since I set it up hours and hours ago. Settlers would sometimes sleep in my bed and relax in my chair (I pretty much built a solid metal man cave in the back of Sanctuary) but hasn't touched any of the items I've left out in the open.

I have only stored items that I won't be displaying but don't want to sell yet (like cool weapons) in containers I personally made. They're always there, no one ever touches them. If you put them in the pre-existing containers in the settlement, there is a risk of you losing the item.

Not to mention Dogmeat loves to yank any weapons you have on display and drag them back to you if he's with you.

Safe on some items?

I like the idea of decorating, but i can never set time aside to actually do it since i dont like to do things half heartedly. If im going to decorate i need all the materials to do it in one go.

In the beginning of the game mabey about 6-8hours in i set up a few nukacolas to display on a shelf in sanctuary in the home with the power armor suit holder. In the living room the left broken bookshelf is where i liad a regular, cherry and quantam nuka colas by dropping them and manually standing them up.

I didnt know i could drop them, go into build mode and they would stand on thier own. They are on the bottom shelf, next to the bed rolls where people sleep fully within reach. Only the regular nuka cola is missing. Im at 80 hours of play and the quantam/cherry are still there. So i guess some items are safe and others arent?

I have a metal container I made (again, do not store anything in containers you didn't make for the settlements yourself!) that specifically holds all my "Junk" right next to the workshop. So I drop off the stuff that's unique or cool or that would add a lived-in look to the apartments/rooms I made and the rest goes into the workshop to be used for steel, plastic, etc.

It's easier to decorate if you don't try and do everything at once. So make a room and decorate just that room, then go back to questing or exploring, etc. Otherwise it gets boring/tedious.
