SPOILERS! Defend the Castle seems impossible

I just "finished" the quest Defend the Castle, and I use air quotes, because I ended up using god mode to kill the last 10%. I'm level 34, and I've played the entire game on normal without much of a challenge, but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

I barricared every entrance to the castle and set up turrets, which worked just fine for the first 80% or so, but once I hit 90% all that was left were Institute Coursers waiting outside the walls. I literally couldn't peek anywhere without instantly losing half my health and having my head crippled. I think I died around 20 times, used 30 stimpaks, all of my grenades, molotovs, and mines, as well as at least 1500 rounds. I even tried switching down to Very Easy, but even then I could only land 1-2 hits before retreating to heal.

I eventually said "♥♥♥♥ it" and toggled god mode, because I legitimately couldn't see another way to finish this. It just seems like that quest was WAY more difficult than it had any reason to be. Oh, and before you say "Should've used your power armor." I tried. I got out for 3 minutes to place defenses, and that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Preston stole it.

BTW, anyone know if there's a way to get NPC's to leave power armor?

If Preston is available to be a companion then just get him to follow you. Then when he is following go to the Command option and Talk, then tell him to get out of the power armor. Should work, I've done it a few times. Or if you have a spare power suit skeleton you can tell him to follow you then command him to enter the other power armor skeleton.

Edit: did you build and use any of the artillery against the Coursers? you don't need to pop your head above your defenses to throw a smoke grenade.

Joking right? This was an incredibly easy mission. Do you have any turrets set up? Bring a Fat Man and/or Missile Launcher.

I figured there was some way to do it much better. Don't use large weapons, but a fat man and using the artillery would've made that 1000x easier. Whoops.

i did it with a .38 pipe rifle XD it took ages but i cheesed her out :3

I am currently doing the quest at level 18 and the last courser with the skull by his name is driving me ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ CRAZY. I have died 3 times to him already he is WAY too OP. I have basically killed him like 5 times and then right when i have to reload he uses a stimpak and i have to do the whole thing all over again. ♥♥♥♥ is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bananas.

The funniest part of this topic is the fact if you set your defenses up right all you need to do is run around repairing a few turrets. Then you let the defenses win it for you.

Defending the castle for final quest at level 18, ya you dont think part of your problem was rushing the story?

i had no issues defending the castle in my first play through (havent even taken the castle in my 2nd playthrough yet)
i blocked off all but the door entrance and set up rocket turrents either side and then set up 2 heavy laser turrets inside to cover the door entrance
and a few heavy machine gun turrents libreraly scattered around the walls .... hardly had to shoot any enemies mainly because they were dead before they even got close to the door ....
i also had several guard posts either side of the door entrance too ... but i have to say you have plenty of time to build your defences one you take the castle the first time.
also you could also create a kill zone using lower level turrets if you dont have access to the higher level ones just create a narrow channel that the enemies have to go through and just put plenty of turrets above ect and watch the carnage..... those concrete floor sections are very useful for the slope outside .... add walls to the top so your turrets cant be shot at from a distance

Defending the Castle was pretty brutal for me on Survival at about lvl 61, I got the quest after defeating the Instituute and the Brotherhood. I had Synths show up on the shore side and Brotherhood on the main entrance side, with some Raider dogs attack as well lol. My turrets got rekt pretty quick lol. Thank the lord I had my X-01 Powerarmor on at the time otherwise I would have lost miserably. I had Ashmaker with heavy weapons perk maxed and like 4000 ammo for it and I still ran out of ammo! Those Legendary Brotherhood Commanders in powerarmor can take a beating thats for damn sure, and there was at least 5.

After the fight I spent a good hour rebuilding and making new fortifications lol. It takes an assault like that to show the weak points in my defense haha. Good times.

Defending the Castle is bloody easy if you set up your defences correctly and if so you shouldnt have to fire a single round...

I did it for the first time on my current 3rd play through. I blocked the back entrance with a shack foundation and only had time to erect one missle defense. I had no power armor but I did have a fully loaded missle launcher, (x4 with tracking), and a fuly loaded railgun. I just used the missle launcher. *ping* fire *doop* x4, reload, repeat. :) Though last couple of corsers were tough, took about 3-4 missles each.

Anyone evr set up minefields? I havent yet but im curious noone every mentions them.

I was under the impression they would despawn after a certain amount of time away from the area like most other weapons you drop. Correct me if I am wrong because that would be an amazing tactic.

Honestly, I just ran away from the castle and completed "Ad Victoriam" so it would be completed Automatically.
