Say goodbye to alternate start mods
because I can't even fathom how that would work in a game where the entire main quest revolves around you being your perfect, loving, on rails family man/woman hell bent on finding their babby with no other incentive other than 'i must, i love'

Other than ripping out the main story as well. I wouldn't mind being a wastelander who just joins up with the brotherhood for some no-strings attached carnage.

easy. the alternate start quest begins after the tutorial stage. plops you right in vault 111 after making your toon. would take some serious scripting but it's possible and a sacrifice people might have to make in order to play custom races.

Honestly, I don't mind the pretense behind your character, but I feel as though there's no free will to do exactly what you want. Ten steps in and you're bound to protecting these randos and become their leader/town lackey and it sets you on an on-rails path that throws off my gameplay. "Cool I know I gotta go to diamond city for help with my kid, but let me screw around with all these side quests and settlements for 80 hours first"

Why not just wake up in a random shed like in new vegas alternate start? Isn't the point of an alternate start to give you more freedom to roleplay and not have a already written history? Of course you have to stay away from the main quest chain and some other quests or else it breaks immersion, but that wasn't much different in previous fallouts or skyrim.

It certanly is near impossible to play the main story without mentionings of that little brat.

That's the thing, a lot would have to change even with the dialogue because almost every interraction with a scripted NPC is 'oh man help me with my babby i need my babby'

There were alternative start mods for fallout 3, and that also had the same issue with the "i need to find my daddy" questline. I think we will be fine.

You always needed to find your father in Fallout 3. You always needed to find the guy who shot you in New Vegas. All of these games' main characters have a pre-determined back story.

Yeah that is pretty bad. I need to find my son i need to find my son bla bla bla. Worst thing is to get things going you need to play parts of it unless a alternative mod would set events rolling like the arrival of the brotherhood.

Make towns, invite people in, kill em rinse and repeat. You will get the Mr. Jones perk

j/k

'finding the guy' who shot you though is very vague, as is finding your father. Again, it's not so much the plot, but the fact that you can't even do loads of side quests or factions without your mission to rescue your kid coming up

Maybe my character accepts that his kid is gone, or dead, and he just wants to survive

Easy, just gradually turn character into killer - because every single person whom he/she will meet after leaving the vault will try to kill him. Not only raiders but settlers and all.

Make world appear hostile and you can easily justify main hero loosing it. After all we are not talking about civilian that never killed a fly,it is a soldier that came back from frontlines not so long ago, maybe even with mental traumas, and then those dirty smelly stupid nobodies from the future killed his SO and kidnapped kid.

You mean like skipping the vault in F3, or the intro in Skyrim?

I dont see how alternate starting points changes in F4. Its always been a bit immersion breaking. Not a big issue if you want it there but doesnt change much.

You're right, I didn't even think about that brotherhood part

Yeah, they don't even show up in force until you're about halfway through the main story

Its the same thing as 3.... the main quest is always there. Having to find your father...having to find your kid. Its literally the same thing. I don't see what would keep these alternate start mods from happening if they have done so already.

Well with skyrim and 3, your character was still an open slate

More so with skyrim, you were nothing

in fallout 3 yeah you were part of a vault and had a family, but you could still be a super mega douche right off the bat. 4 plays to the entire role that you're a loving family man who had a perfect picket fence life prior to the bombs
