Good weapons for a vats crit build?
Do diffrent guns have diffrent critical multipliers? Also does the vats cost of a gun change depending on what mods it has?

Yes the mods in the weapon changes the number of shots youll get in VATS. The mod that made the biggest difference in that regard was the scope. For good weapons for crit build id say pistols are pretty good since you can shoot alot with em. Later on youll find legendary weapons that give big advantages to crits and stuff so youll have to adapt depending on what you find.

I believe you just want any legendary with a crit bonus. I have a laser rifle that fills critical meter quicker and does increased crit damage. The higher difficulty you play, the higher is the chance you'll eventually drop it (and many others).

edit: As for the post above, my long laser rifle fills criticals with 3 shoots (can do 2 with 100% AP). My pistol with 100% can fire about 5 times I think, doesn't even hit half the crit bar.

I wouldn't be that sure about pistols :) Keep in mind I did not make a VATS build, have all points in Intelligence, threw some into luck, with remaining stats kinda balanced, but low. Bought few charisma perks.

Also keep in mind, my pistol is freezing, while long rifle is the legendary for the vats and crits. So regardless of a weapon type, you want it to be a legendary.

Pistol might be good, because you can rapidly fire it and cause crits outside the VATS.
You can use certain drugs (overcharge, was it?) to guarantee that almost every shot will be a crit. I could freeze an army of ghouls with my pistol in that case.

OPTIONS, OPTIONS :)

did having a scope give you more or less shots?

I am pretty sure you have to just watch out for the rate of fire there. So sniper mods will make it painfully slow, while automatics will give you plenty. I found out that semi-auto (rate of fire about 50) is the best way to go for me.

crits add crit damage on top of base damage (x2 base damage)
certain weapon mods can increase crit damage, up to double the crit damage (x3 base damage)
certain perks can increase crit damage (better criticals, etc), up to 250% damage (x3.5 base damage)
you can also get perks to just flat out increase the damage of a weapon, which will also increase its crit damage
there is a legendary mod prefix (lucky) that makes the crit bar charge faster, and doubles crit damage (x3 damage). Danse's laser rifle (Righteous Authority) has this by default.
so with a lucky critmod gun and maxed better criticals, you can get 11 times the base damage with 1 shot
I believe heavier guns generally have higher AP costs (and mods add weight), don't trust me on this though

Laser Musket is pretty cool.

I mean, you can one shot kill power armor wearing raiders with a 4 crank crit head shot from the laser musket. Without any combat perks. Sneak attacking mirelurks properly just kills them. Super mutants go down fast even without crits....

Gunners seem to have laser resistant chest hair though. WTF is up with shirtless "Gunner" humans tanking more firepower than armored supermutants or mirelurks?

Imagine what that will do at 6 crank, which is 180 energy damage minimum without any perks.

Laser musket beats the hell out of a laser sniper on a "per shot" basis for crit fishing. But that's if you have the luxury to crank it. (and im pretty sure if it reloads during vats, it only cranks once then fires which is meh)

Laser sniper and bolt action have the benefit of not needing to stop and wind it multiple times to make it's shots relevant.

But a normal wound up laser musket is some holy **** damage you'd need "legendary" whatever or heavy weapons to compete with on a per trigger pull basis.
