Is the junk jet as worthless as it seems?

I just did the quest where you can pick up the junk jet...and it doesn't seem useful. Even when you charge a shot it doesn't seem to do too much damage, and the thing is really really heavy. also, i don't really want to fire junk in this game because everything is useful now, unlike fallout 3

You can mod it later to add things like bonus Electric/fire damage and the objects you fire don't vanish upon shooting them. Which means you can relentlessly murder low-level mobs with that Jangles the Moon Monkey you found.

The problem is that junk in this game is useful, so its nowhere near as good as it was in the games predesessor.
