I don't know what happens to mods that come on guns you find, or what happens when you scrap one. I haven't tried scrapping a gun yet, that sounds like a pain. You have to drop it on the ground don't you?
You're best bet is if you find a PLAIN Fat man WITH mods, is to make the STANDARD mods on the PLAIN one.
Then if you find a LEGENDARY, attach the BETTER mods you got from changing mods on the previous
the mods you see are the ones that were replaced when you modded the weapon. the created mods currently on the weapon are scrapped along with the weapon.
With guns you can just scrap from the weapons workbench.
If you want to keep a mod from a weapon you picked up to add it to another weapon, you need to mod it to replace the mod you want to keep (use a standard stock you have on hand for example). Then that upgraded mod will go to your inventory and you can then add it to another weapon.
Oooh. Ok this explains why I have some mods in my workbench. I assume you can apply those ones directly to another applicable weapon without spending the normal resources since they are already built?
Correct, and this can be incredibly awesome when you find/buy guns that have mods you currently can't craft.
