How do you advance the Railroad quests?

Just how many sidequests do you have to do for the Precipice of War quest to trigger for the Railroad? I'm at a point at the game where the only Institute quest I have is the one that says I have to kill Desdemona, and Desdemona herself is saying that I need to assist the other members, which I have been doing seemingly to no avail. Underground Undercover says I need to "continue working with Father" and that also won't advance.

Could it be that I missed something and I can't get the Railroad ending anymore? Would appreciate if someone could help.

Edit: Figured it out! Had to go back to the Institute to trigger something that advances the Underground Undercover quest. If you had the same problem, try going back to the Institute. A synth should talk to you.

Anyone? Did I already screw it up, because the Nuclear Option quest never triggered for me. Did not doing that lock me out of the Railroad ending completely?

I'm also stuck here. According to web resources, "Precipice of War" quest comes after "Operation Ticonderoga", which I've completed and now I'm running around like a moron trying to do those neverending Randolph Safehous and Weathervane quests hoping that it will trigger something.

I actually figured it out. I went back to the Institute and a synth came up to me and told me to talk to Z1-14, and that advanced the Underground Undercover quest, which allowed me to do the others without any problems. Try going to the Institute and see if that happens for you too. Hope it helps.

OK you need to continue the Institute Quest line until after the second directorate meeting, and when you get a new quest called "End of the Line". A friend of Z1 will come running up to you telling you to meet Z1. Z1 will be in your quarters. Take it from there :)

The problem is: the only Institute quest is Mass Fusion. In this quest, I have to choose between being enemy of the Institute or BoSteel. No other way out or other quests. And my final go is to end the Institude, so I choose to stay with the BoS and the mission "Underground Underver" fails.
Anyway, I'll live with it.

This is the point of no return. You can either finish with the Brotherhood, the Institute, or the Underground. They are all mutually exclusive.

Yes, but after the Mass Fusion mission (and get hostile Institute in my case), you can go to a fourth option: the Minuteman. That way I could stay friendly and not destroy the Railroad and the BoSteel.

Well, the word you used is often used as an insult, but other than that, the use of the word is closely associated with the eugenic movement who argued that the 'upper' class (essentially people who were rich because of inherited wealth) were genetically superior and advocated segregation and forced sterilization for the poor.

Same issue here. I can't warn Desdemona and the Underground Undercover quest is stuck.

BUT I FOUND A SOLUTION :)

I manually completed the "Underground Undercover" mission, in the console :
CompleteQuest RR201

Then I went in the Institude where a Synth told me to go talk to Z1-14. As I didn't have the cursor to find him, I teleported to him :
player.moveto 000d3cba

Then I went to the Railroad HQ to talk to Desdemona.

And then "Precipe Of War" quest started.

If it's not really the same bug as me, maybe you can try the "CompleteQuest" with others quest.
You can type "sqt" in the console to get your current Quest ID.

Hello, sir. I done that too and some weeks ago I finish the game main story.

I have a question: in the mission "Precipe Of War", was there a FRIENDNLY NPC in the church from the Brotherhood of Steel? I don't know if it was a bug for me, but it was in my case. So I could avoid killing him and I never got hostile or destroyed the BoSteel.

Yeah, I know. But in my case there was a NPC from BoSteel that was friendly and didn't attack me and the Railroad in the Church. I'd like to know it was a bug or this non-hostile NPC was intentional. Anyway, I liked it. I could keep both factions alive.

You have to get a certain number of settlements unlocked (safehouse missions) before railroad storyline will advance

Minuteman was the same on my last playthrough

and I'm sure BOS requires it as well
