Colin Moriarty's accent was poor, but it was consistent. You could tell he or at least his recent ancestors were Irish, and the deviation from that could be put down to influence from the people he's lived around for so long. But he doesn't sound like he is from Ireland originally.
Cait on the other hand... all of her mannerisms and turns of word are meant to be Irish, and all of the accents that are thrown into her character hint at that too. But the difference is that the actor for Cait had no idea what she was doing or had very poor direction from Bethesda. The accents are all over the place, inconsistent even within sentences and there is no in-world justification for that other than some sort of mental damage.
What the hell kind of accents have you been hearing out of Galway?? None of the accents Katy Townsend tried were even close to Galway. And she tried a lot of different Irish accents, most of them wrong. And also, pikies/travellers do have the same harshness of voice that Cait does, but the accent itself, not really.
Obviously there are people who don't have issue with Cait's voice because they don't know what Irish or Scottish people actually sound like IRL, and that's fine. But Liam Neeson is Irish, and he voiced the Lone Wanderer's dad in Fallout 3 and he was loved for it! Bethesda are perfectly capable and perfectly funded to hire an actual Irish actor that could've done a better job, or just get the character to BE Scottish if they hired a Scottish voice actor.
But on top of all of those reasons, whether she's meant to be Scottish or Irish or some horrible combination of the two, there was no simple reason why Cait should have an accent so far deviant from those of the people she's surrounded by. That's how accents come about. I understand that accents make characters different to the NPCs around them, but Mama Murphy is pretty unique in her character, and she has a reasonably accurate Boston-Irish accent.
The argument a lot of people here have given (or excuse) is that accents evolve with time. Well, for one thing: time is only one factor in how accents change, influence from surrounding and connected communities and cultures is the biggest factor that changes accents. So with that in mind, the idea that her accent is merely an 'evolved' Irish accent could only be justified if every other accent we hear in the game is some twisted version of our 21st century equivalent.
But that's not what he hear, the Diamond City guards talk in a thick Boston accent, somewhat stereotypical, but much closer to the real thing than Cait's accent. While many of the other NPCs in the game have 'generalised' American accents, at least they are consistent and more believable and are what they are due to the voice actors chosen for the roles. Many are returning VAs from previous Fallout games or veterans of VA-ing from other video games. The VA for Garrus in Mass Effect makes an appearance and he's from Arkansas!
There are fan theories out there that suggest that Cait's accent and persona is all due to a result of her past and her trying to run from it by hiding behind her 'tough Irish gal' personality. These theories state that she is probably not Irish at all, but uses the personality to seem strong in the face of all she's been through. This is even backed up by some of the things Cait says to the PC at high affinity levels. If you guys want that as a way of coping with her terrible voice acting, it's a far better reason than 'accents evolve'.
I'm from and live in Ireland man, I even said that. I have family from Galway, I have friends from Galway. None of them sound like Cait. Her accent is made up of bits and pieces from every Irish accent they were able to think of without actually knowwing what those accents sound like. They just jumbled them together. So yes, I will tell you off if you are wrong :D Because you are. No Irish person sounds like her.
And if you're complaining about me posting a comment over a year after this thread was started... dude so did you FFS. The original post is almost two years old but you commented in February of THIS year and complain that I posted a comment after a year? Check yourself bud. And especially if you're complaining about it being a long post, don't freaking quote the entire thing :D Quote what you are responding to. I would correct your grammar to make the point that you're the dumb one here, but you do a pretty good job of pointing it out yourself.
I replied to this post before you did bud, this was my second comment on the thread, so yours was well over a year after the fact. Whining at me when I'm stating the truth won't make your opinions any closer to correct. And you're right, me disagreeing with someone doesn't make me right. Being correct and knowing what I'm talking about does.
And I'm not getting mad :D I haven't criticised anything without giving a reason for it. Trying to claim that I'm being unreasonable, when you yourself are saying that you don't give a ♥♥♥♥ about my reasons for saying things, makes you the moron. Like I said before, check yourself man. Seriously. :D
i'm not surprised it pisses irish people off i would be annoyed with a crappy or a unconsistent english voice.
Man you're just not worth the effort :D That post is so incoherent it's not even worth responding to.
Dude what? :D Opinions can't be wrong is that it? And if it's only two people disagreeing why is there over a hundred other comments here?
