Best settlement for a farmstead?
So i want to build an old fashioned farmstead with a barn and large house that every one lives in and crops and cattle. But im having problems finding a good place to put it. I havent found anything that looked to great for it. The drive in looked really good at first but its with that radiation and the building it really throws off the whole vibe. I havent done alot if exploring yet but that one farm settlement east of sanctuary looked really promising except its so darn small.

There's 3 or 4 that have exactly what you're looking for. Sunshine Drive-in is more of a prime trade route location.

Try "The Slog". It's run by ghouls, but it looks epic. Even has a swimming pool.

There's the Obert? station farm just south of Sanctuary (maybe South, Southeast), which is already a farm. It has just the kind of look you might be looking for.

Alternatively theres a greenhouse run by Mr. Handy robots - You can live there and grow crops.

Hmm, there's a very big settlement you can get over on the eastern side of the map. It's called Nordhagen Beach and It's on an island. Once you clear it up (junk/tree's) it has a lot of space with nothing in it but a shack, which should let design most of it yourself without stuff getting in the way.

Nordhagen Beach also shares It's borders with the ocean, so you have a water source for your water purifiers, and there's only one way in and out: Over a bridge, so it should be easy to defend.

It does have one drawback though: The land is uneven, It's not flat like Starlight Drive-in. However, as with any settlement that's a little bumpy you can just even it all out with concrete floor tile (very handy for that).

There may be another drawback, It's close to the ocean so...you may get attacked by Mirelurks a lot, but I haven't built it up much so I'm not sure. Depends how far into the game you are and whether you have completed Retake Castle minuteman quest as that's when the raids start.

Another large place, and one that looks far more rustic (thus would suite the look you're going for) is the big farm just a bit south of Sanctuary, Abernathy Farm. I actually think that would suite you better because if I remember right it has a big farmhouse in it. However, it doesen't have access to a water source.

That reminds me, that radioactive pool in Starlight Drive-in you mentioned: Go into build mode and scrap the barrels lying in it, that will clear the radiation and provide you with a water source for your larger water pumps.

There's a few other farm-like settlements, but I can't remember them at the moment because there is so many settlements in the game that I've forgotten where half of them are. Everyone seems to set up shop in Sanctuary, I'm not sure why as there are far better settlements out there with more space in them.

The largest ones I know of are: Starlight Drive-In, Nordhagen Beach, Abernathy Farm and Sunshine Tidings co-op. I've probably forgotten one or two, and I haven't found all settlements yet, even though I have tons of the damn things.

Hope that helps, goodluck.

Finch Farm is great too

You pretty much described Abernathy Farm, right down to the giant house everyone lives in.

With mods you could clear out sanctuary.
Without, spectacle island is huge. Not sure how flat it is though.

Not Abernathy farm it won’t repair damaged crops for some reason.

But it will still consume your supplies regardless

I have all sorts of settlement mods (scrapping , Homemaker expanded settlements ,no height restriction , all kinds of building mods and mods for water , power , crops and defence)

Some settlements are stripped bare , others where I leave the crops and sometimes the buildings
alone . Abernathy Farm (in my opinion) needs only power and defence .

In the end it's your decision to have just a couple of small shacks with defence , or build a thriving
metropolis .

I like building a large farm at Sunshine Tidngs co-op while I convert some of the existing buildings in to living space and use the large central area for food.

There is room for a LOT of crops at Sunshine Tidings. I usually make it my main farm.

Although I can't for the life of me tell who's query we are responding to I will add my two cents.

Spectacle Island has always been my choice for a complete farm experience. Water and food areas are plentiful. It is humongous for building and pretty much feels like you are out in the middle of nowhere.
