How do you "Gift" items to Companions?

I noticed that the guides say that some companions like it when you gift them "Gifts"
But what items are considered are "Gifts"? and how do you "Gift" them to your companions?
*I only see the trade items menu.

command them and trade item to them or if in talk a option is seen! some perks open more options to influence others in a speech.

Talk to them, trade option, put anything you wish them to have in their inventory, highlight the item in their inventory and press T to equip. Remember that if you give them a ranged weapon that you must also give them ammo for it.

when you have trade open, hit Y (for xbox controller) to equip what you give them. BUG ALERT~~ I gave Piper a Gauss rifle and no other weapon but she somehow unequips it and starts shooting a 10mm pistol that is NOT in her inv, anywhere.

That's her main weapon (the pistol). Don't know if followers can actually use weapons you give them atm.

She uses a 10mm pistol as a default when she has no ammo for the other weapons

Yes they can. highlight the weapon and press T

Thanks for the information on this because I'd been wondering as well.

I know that you must give your companions or settlers ammo if you want them to use the weapon you asked them to equip.
