They don't let you change it. He has a set design which he likes to be seen as

Is this really intended or is it a bug? Even mutant companions and the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ dog can wear armor bits.

By design. I will not spoil it, but like I said. He has a design that he wants to keep

Oh you really can't change it? I was kinda hoping to give him the SIlver Shroud "Armor".

@Sky Spider Girl

Already completed all of his questlines, so there is no spoiler for me. But yeah it doesn't make much sense to me in any case.

Can you change the outfit on any of the companions?

Yes.

Try this; open the trade window with companion...highlight an item of apparel in his/her inventory and (whether an info box shows up or not)...click "T". on computer, that should force npc to equip whatever it is...."Y" on x-box..."triangle" on PS4.
***also handy for putting something like a particular type hat on settlers assigned a specific job, etc.

You can get him to use different weapons as long as you also give them the ammo to do so. With anyone else you just hover over an item in their inventory and hit T. With this you can give your dog bandanas and "dog armor" that can be found on enemy attack dogs. Similarly if you ever explore a super mutant area, you'll usually find a piece of super mutant specific armor laying around (which you can't take off of super mutant bodies for some reason) and this stuff can all be equipped by Strong.

How *spoiler* "mass" produced synth finding his identity in an outfit not wanting to part with said outfit makes no sense? :P

Actually that's one interpretation/theory but nothing more.

*spoiler* His entiere personal questline is about him getting closure on "his" past (ie. Nick Valentine's unfinished business) so he can move on with his own life - his detective agency and the life he's built for himself here.

And then, the dog and Strong (mutant) can wear armor/apparel, even if it's not the generic humanoid type. Like people indicated, you can equip items on various NPCs, so I was a little disappointed that Nick could not wear even some basic humanoid armor (and agreed with the poster earlier commenting on how good he'd look in SIlver Shroud's outfit!).

(I mean, interpretation/theory in that, mostly we know why he got his memories, justify the coat to some extend, but not that he would absolutely not leave it.)

There is only one armor that I have EVER been able to equip him with, and that was the same armor that he gives you for aiding him. It is a copy of what he already wears, BUT for those of you looking to upgrade his base armor late game, you CAN upgrade this armor with ballistic fiber later on. BE WARNED: After you give him the armor, you can't take it back off him. It is a ONE TIME deal. As he does not take off his default armor, you will have nothing else to put on him later, for him to take off the new trench coat you just gave him! I hope this helps! ^^

I can equipped a ballistic weave Mk.V faded trenchcoat on him. Although for some reason his old gear is not available for me after the swap.

And yeah Nick can only be equipped with faded trenchcoat.
