By design. I will not spoil it, but like I said. He has a design that he wants to keep
Already completed all of his questlines, so there is no spoiler for me. But yeah it doesn't make much sense to me in any case.
***also handy for putting something like a particular type hat on settlers assigned a specific job, etc.
Actually that's one interpretation/theory but nothing more.
*spoiler* His entiere personal questline is about him getting closure on "his" past (ie. Nick Valentine's unfinished business) so he can move on with his own life - his detective agency and the life he's built for himself here.
And then, the dog and Strong (mutant) can wear armor/apparel, even if it's not the generic humanoid type. Like people indicated, you can equip items on various NPCs, so I was a little disappointed that Nick could not wear even some basic humanoid armor (and agreed with the poster earlier commenting on how good he'd look in SIlver Shroud's outfit!).
wow i didn't see this...now nick can use kellogg's .44...thank you!!
And yeah Nick can only be equipped with faded trenchcoat.
