I.E. A globe has screws, wood and other things, if the item you're making only needs screws, the bench will scrap the globe FOR THE SCREWS ONLY, but not scrap the wood and other parts into inventory
From other posts, people have said the best way to make sure you get ALL the components of an item, is drop them all on he ground, enter the build menu (Hold down V) and highlight the items one by one and scrap them.
Then, once you're done, you can "store Junk" at the workbench
Or get the supply lines perk to fix this part of the game (as in, the game is intentionally designed to be cumbersome and annoying to force you to waste one level up reward on basic funcationality)
Huh, I hadn't even considered that anyone could conceive such a dumb system (if it's true)
A little more info, there us a current bug which may lead you to think raw components are lost when an item of junk containing that component is scrapped for a different use; such as using a desk fan for screws and it appearing that the steel has been lost. This is not the case, the raw component is in the workbench inevtory, it is just hidden and will update once the number of that component is changed (add a piece of steel and the number will go to what it should be).
Hope this helps
Actually that's not true. It's been verified on Reddit that you do get all of the components. If you go out of the menu and come back in you will see that the unused components are there.
