I also have found that over time, new things become available to build. I am not sure if I hit a tier or minimum amount built to unlock the new things, but they were not skill selection related (like needing science 1 or something). They just became available, like the bobble head stand being buildable when a few hours previously it was not.
Likewise, various other items have become available to build, so maybe a big gate will "unlock" later based on game events and one's actions.
I'm level 59 and have completed at least 1 of the endings. Have collected almost evey magazine and I only have the junk gate. The only other option is if you collect one of the perk magazines it allows you to build picket fences and gate but thats like a tiny gate.
That's good info -- I should continue to build as I am building, but that there is a chance there may be a cooler gate in my future.
I'd really like to get some of my settlement folks to gear up in the power armors I have found, and go out and strip down some of the raider outputs I emptied. There's a gate right there just waiting to be taken away!! But oh well.
Make something too neat and people will whine about what it can't do, so I should appreciate what we have!
