Really??? I haven't beaten the game, I have 37 defense in sanctuary and it has been attacked 3 times so far.
Yes, I believe they can kill settlers. Not too sure since I've successfully defended the raids as well. I believe I read a thread were they said if they get attacked too much, the happiness drains, and the settlers will leave the settlement altogether.
That said:
Establishing a settlement network has the following benefits:
1: A good settlement network provides fresh water, produce, and scavenged junk available for use anywhere in the network. You can load up on tons of junk and take a short walk to the nearest settlement instead of dropping swag so you can fast travel.
2: A good settlement network allows you to support larger town settlements.
3: Larger town settlements benefit the most from shops, each of which will provide a small sum of caps daily based on the settlements' population
I make sure my defense is close to the food + water. Right now I believe (I'm on my phone app and not in-game) my food+water is 40 and my Def is 37.
You want 40+ defense, or you are at risk.
How do you get them to scavenge for junk?
Settlers will auto-assign themselves to farms by default. If all the crops are being worked, they will default to sometimes producing free scrap at their settlement.
If you manually assign people to Scavenging stations, they supposedly produce more scrap. Despite extensive testing and significant slave driving, this will never compare to the amount of scrap you can bring in by raiding a building, so do not expect this to be an earth-shattering benefit.
It's wierd, but you can ID people assigned to Scavenging stations because they run around with their pistol out all the time.
