How to tell what clothes you can wear with armor?

Some shirts/suits dequip armor pieces on arms legs and torsos accordingly because they are one solid piece of amror; how can I tell what I can use with arms, legs, and chest pieces?

I can only put amour on when wearing long john.

I don't think you really need to buy any under garments, just stick with long johns (lame looking), road leathers (cool), or raider leathers (meh).

They're my first choice. :)
