END GAME SPOILER INSIDE, Preston Garvey keeps saying the same sentence when I talk to him, cant get him to follow me.

Alright,so I finished the main story line as BOS without talking to preston about doing it with the minutemen. Now I came back to him and all he says when I press on him is "The institute is gone" and then he blames me for it but says he's glad it's gone and that we should get back to work, however he keeps saying this over and over and I can't get him to follow me anymore or do anything at all really as it does not give me the options, any help with this? I've tried clearing settlements to see if that helps but it does not help.

ALSO please refrain from talking anything containing spoilers in this thread, keep on topic about the bug please.

I believe there is a hidden friendship meter

Max = gives you a special perk

Good = He'll do mostly all the commands you ask him, take Nick for example, if you're good with him he will hack few terminals

Normal = Normal

Bad = He won't follow you

It is not that, I checked my affinity with him and it is at 523, I am completely lost now.. Trying to do all the minuteman quests and see if it debugs him.

Some lines of dialogue take prescedence over others.
ie I couldn't finish the se invicta quest because danse would only talk to me about being my companion, due to companion dialogue being "more important" than the quest one. In your case, I think the "Institute is gone" dialogue is more important than his normal/companion ones.

For me, the fix just....happened. Sorry if that doesn't help at all, but just one time when I talked to Danse he told me to see Lancer-Captain Kells for the quest. I can only tell you to persist with the dialogue attempts.

Try a fix that worked when Piper was bugged for me

Open the console, select him and type
removefromfaction 75d56

You should be able to talk to him normally again. If not I can't help you either.

same here. he keeps blaming for blowing up the whole institute and repeats that dialogue. i also tried completing an old quest he gave me. i could return the quest to him, he gave me the reward, assigned a new minutemen quest then entered that damn dialogue loop again.

I have had the same issue. I really hope this isn't just supposed to be a side effect of destroying the institute. Preston is my favorite follower (for some reason) and he has tons of valuable items that I can't pickpocket off him. I also can't get him out of Sanctuary so he just sits there in my urban settlement stopping me in doorways to initiate this conversation.

but it only works if you sided with the brotherhood AFAIK
