Building trade shops is very bad or am I missing something?
My biggest settlement is the castle, I have 17 people there.

Built 3 max level shops (the most expensive ones around 3000 caps). I played a whole day, about 6-7 hours... when I came back the shops had only made 84 caps. For an investment of 9000 or so total.

Yes all 3 have people assigned to work them.

Is it supposed to be this low or did i miss something?

Do multiple shops of different kind stack in same settlement? maybe we should only build one per settlement... ?

If you have experimented with shops please share your experience, maybe we can figure this out.

I have built 3 medium sized shops and 1 small shop in sanctuary with 12 people living there now, i have got like 86 or so caps from a few hours, i do understand your feelings with this, since it seems to be an investement that is supposed to make you caps, but honestly it just seems to be more of a local shop for yourself to sell/buy stuff from, also i'm pretty sure multiple shops stack.

But it remains a mystery to me, i think the only way to truly make it a good investment would be to have 1 little store in every settlement and then add it all up, perhaps with that you could make a few hundred caps every hour

Shops are definitely screwy. Built a tier 3 weapon shop, assigned someone, he immediately had great items. Came back couple of days later and now it's a woman running it and no stock, nothing beyond a few items of hers, no weapons or anything. Guess this stuff needs serious fixing, because it doesn't seem to work at all.

Problem with many shops in many settlements is it would be too much work traveling around collecting the money. Unless local leader works on sharing the money in all workshops and collecting in a single one? Not sure it works that way...

What we could do is setup a different sized shop in every settlement and see how much they make per hour. Small, medium, big, of different types.

I'll do that when i have the caps but right now i only have 90.

I have the same problem. 17 settlers in sanctuary and only 84 caps after a full day of play. 5 lvl 2 shops.

Someone on reddit is saying that you only get caps for idle settlers, not total number of settlers.

ye i guess the shops are only just for having a trader in your settlement and moral-boost not more, you cant really get rich with it and settlers dont get better equiptment or anything, they dont even interact with them, i built something like a tavern, with table and chairs and stuff within a Bar (medium gastronomy shop) but nobody is ever inside or do something in it......like i said, settlement is only about 60-70% finished and they just stopped working on it

I`ve only just started to set up a few shops. My worker for the small gun stall dont want to go behind the desk. She would rather stand around some random place unless i order her to go somewhere. I can still trade with her it just looks very bad with the stall being empty.
Tried changing worker, nothing happened. My small junk stall and small bar works fine.

They are mostly useful as places to buy supplies and sell your loot. Each shop has between 300 to 600 caps. And it's pretty easy to bring in loot worth around 1000 to 2000 caps so you need several shops to sell it.
They are not a great source of income but the point is mute as money is pretty easy to make in the game.

Are the shop incomes based on playtime or in game time? I.e. Can you just sleep for 24h and then collect caps?

It seems to be pretty hit or miss, because I rarely get more than 100 caps whenever I check on Sanctuary (with a lvl 1 trader and lvl 3 guns and armor), but I checked on Castle just a bit ago (with the medic stall provided, a lvl 3 food stall and lvl 3 trader) and found 700 caps :S
