How to upgrade armor? (not power armor)

Im having a lot of armor pieces and i dont know what to do with them. chest pieces, leg armor, arm armors stuff like that. What do i do with it. Im lvl 11 and im using minuteman outfit with 0 dr and its getting difficult to play. Are those items only suitable to power armors? or can i put them directly over my minuteman outfit or something?

I don't recall if the minute man armor is an under layer but basically there several forms of armor in the game. You have a face piece, a head piece, chest, legs and arms. Some armors take all but the face slots, other like long johns and the Vault suit take no slots. Those allow you to wear those armor pieces on top of them. Vault suit for example boosts your radiation resistence quite a bit.

Other armors take up the chest and arms for example but let you free to use whatever leg armor you want. You upgrade those loose pieces of armor at the armor workbench with the right perks.

Basically.. Your Vault 111 jumpsuit is your best basic attire, then you put on leather/metal/combat armour pieces ontop of that.

You'll get other jumpsuits as the game progresses.. like military fatigues etc etc.

The jumpsuit and individual armour pieces can be upgraded at workbenches like the ones in Sanctuary.

The only armor that is upgradable:
Armor Peices for Chest, Arms, Legs
Vault Suit

That's it. NOTHING else is upgradeable. Everything else, like the Drifter outfit, is just cosmetic and won't let you wear proper armor.


That said.. Toughness perk. It works.


Edit: I've not confirmed if anything else is upgradeable, but I'm yet to be convinced to give up my +1 luck Undershirt&Jeans.

My only friends are Dogmeat, Ten Milimeter, and Threeoheight. Ten's the quiet one.

The main problem at the moment is understanding which armor is of which type. Currently finding the underlayer is a trial and error. For example Vault jumpsuit, BOS suit work as the basic garments ontop of which you can put arm, leg, chest and helmet.

Look at the right, it will blink what gets replaced. No blinking means it's under armor.

I've only found the vault suit as an upgradeable underarmor.

I've found two different BOS outfits, neither are upgradeable

I can upgrade underarmours to RIDICULOUS stats.

I have a minuteman suit which has 110 armour and 110 AP.
