High settlement defense = never get attacked?
I read some things about this online, not sure if its true but ingame seems to mirror it as I've yet to see a single attack being launched on any of my settlements.

It says that as long as your defense is higher then people/food/water, you'll never get attacked, not even by large groups, logic for that would be that its too dangerous for them so they wont even try. But if this is true then all my defense is for nothing to begin with, kinda disappointing because I really wanted to defend against groups of enemies, I just love defending bases like that, setting up turrets and trying to survive.

Or am I wrong in this and will they eventually send bigger and stronger groups to match up with my defense?

Settlement building is great, but it makes it a bit boring when you realize you wont ever get attacked anyway. I -could- tear down all my turrets and guard posts, but then I'm completely unprepared against attacks and whats the fun in that? I want to keep my base safe but at the same time I would also like them to TRY and overtake it. Just for the fun of defending your base and getting in all kinds of firefights. And so far, that just isnt happening.

I don't know for a certainty. But I was starting to think the same thing after playing for about 30 hours and no attacks. Then suddenly, while I was in the settlement, my largest, most defended settlement got attacked. My carefully placed defenses paid off. So maybe they'll only attack strong settlements while you're there? Not sure.

Okey thats cool to hear, so perhaps there are more factors at play.

I've honestly feel it's just random. I had a small, yet highly defended settlement full of missle turrets and heavy laser turrets, then a group of raiders carrying missile launchers came outta nowhere. Maybe defense does play a part in their apperance or enemy types, but it's too early to test these things.

I believe if your Defense is higher than the total sum of Food+Water you will not get as many chances to be attacked.
But if your Food+Water total sum is higher than defense then you have higher chance to be attacked.

That happened many times in my smaller settlements(4 people 12 defense + Food&Water at 34 in total)

Of course high settlement defense will make enemies not attack. Raiders may be raiders, but they're probably not utterly suicidal. And they probably cant amass that huge manpower either. ;P

I've only been working on one settlement, Sanctuary, and I've had only two attacks. Both were a single raider and both attacks happened my first few hours in the game. My current defense is in the 90's or low 100's, forget, my food is mid 50's or 60's and my water is 30's or so. I want to get attacked too, just to see how it goes. I'm heavily defending the bridge leading into town and I have my main base guarded by three turrets facing the street as it wraps around to your original home in the beginning. I may try storing some defensive items to see if I start getting attacked more.

usually it's the supply caravans that get hit while they're making trips. You'd not believe the trouble they can get into when they decide to run after some radstag with an auto 10mm.

IT takes some time. I wasn't attacked til my 5th settlement was built and the Raiders attacked one of my farming settlements three times. First time was with four raiders, the next two with dozens. Then two other settlements were attacked heavily by Raiders AND Super Mutants.

The supply line guys can get attacked too? Should I be outfitting them with better stuff?

Just a question, with only one settlement, whats the need for more food and water when the max is 10 settlers (20 with max charisma)? Or is therre a way to get more people?

I have several small settlements that I've received through quests, I haven't done any work on them other than adding turrets to one. My main settlement, Sanctuary, is now up to 14 settlers and my charisma is only level 6. Did you mean 10 max in addition to the 5 minutemen you start with?

It is most certainly random.

Even a settlement with enough firepower to decimate a small army, can get attacked.
And it will get destroyed unless you assist it.

The only need for "defense" is to provide a positive number to keep residents happy.
I guess, they can help you in the defense, but they wont defend it without you, no matter how much firepower there is.

super mutants, gunners and synths have all attacked one of my placed that have 800 in defense
they got smoked

check the general quests, it states if a village need help defending

All hihger defense seems to do is lower the odds of attack at that settlement. It can and will still get attacked though.

I built one turet from the tutorial build and that was it. Santuary was never attacked.
