Mine was working earlier today, but now it does this. No error, just the main intro screen comes up, you press Play, the screen goes black with a loading icon, then it just crashes and goes back to the desktop. Tried restarting my computer and Steam, but same issue.

i dont have the best system but it should still be able to get to the main menu and play the game instead of just crashing at the start

I had this issue. I changed my resolution and it started working... I've heard other people had problems with certain resolutions also.

crashes are related to GPU driver version, if it's AMD give up and wait the fix appear the next year

If you're having a black screen after the launcher disappears, try this solution. It involves changing an .ini file (not sure which one, I can't remember, but I added a link below that indicates which one). This will let you run the game in windowed-fullscreen, borderless mode at your resolution. It worked for me and may work for you if you're experiencing what I was (a black screen):

I have a high-end MSi gaming rig that blows away the minimum and recommended specs.

WIth that said, I still had the same issue: Black screen.

So, I found the answer on Reddit. Basically, I ended up having to change the resolution in my .ini file in the Documents/My Games/Fallout 4 folder. In this .ini file, I had to manually change the H and W to 1080 and 1920, respectively (my screens resolution). Once you do that, don't go into Options in the launcher 'cause it'll overwrite your changes. Just start the game and it'll work. At least, it did for me. Had nothing to do with specs. Had everything to do with a bug in the program to begin with.

EDIT: Make sure you're running in windowed-fullscreen, borderless.
Do a google search to find the reddit thread.
Here's one that's similar to what I'm talking about. It may help you:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Fallout/comments/3s8pdi/fallout_4_help_graphical_issues_preventing_play/

EDIT 2: Here's the name of the folder:

Fallout4Prefs.ini

Here's the values that you'll need to change:

bBorderless=1
bFull Screen=0
iSize H=720 (or whatever your screen height is)
iSize W=1080 (or whatever your screen width is)

NOTE: Do not go back into the Options from the launcher menu after you've made your changes to the .ini file. Otherwise, your changes that you just made will be overridden. Just make the changes, save the .ini file, launch the game and choose the Play option.

My issue is that it was working fine earlier today, and now it's suddenly having this issue. Switching to windowed borderless has not helped.
CountZero Nov 13, 2015 @ 7:33pm
I understand that. But, just for grins, why don't you go into the Fallout4Prefs.ini file, make the changes outlined above and try to see if it will fix the issue? Do not use the Options panel to do this. Or, don't try it. It worked for me and quite a few others. Your symptom appears to be what we all experienced.

Aww, I hate that. It's a good game, and I was hoping it would work for you so you could enjoy what you've paid to play. Hopefully, someone will be able to figure out the problem and put out a patch for it.
play in borderless or windowed and make sure no third-party programs are overlapping the game while its launching

Just tried changing the ini. Didn't help, unfortunately.
