Video Hardware Not Identified
I restarted my computer after updating my Nvidia drivers and when the launcher came up it said "Your video hardware was not identified. Video settings have been set for Low Quality." So now every time I hit play it crashes at startup. Anybody have any suggestions to fix this?

I'm having a similar problem.
Click the settings button and click ultra and then click play and enjoy?

That's not going to work. I don't know about the other guy, but in my case, Fallout 4 isn't using my graphics card and is running at 1 fps on the low settings. I've tried a few things but have yet to find a solution.

If you're curious, I have an Nvidia Quadro FX 2800M with 1GB dedicated graphics memory. It can run Skyrim with 100+ mods, 2k textures, and an enb at around 25 fps, so there's no reason that it shouldn't work on vanilla Fallout 4.

I found out that my Graphics Card and CPU were too out of date and I really can't really afford that right now so I just refunded the game

If you're running on a Quadro FX 2800M (which is low end at best these days), I'm surprised you're even able to boot the game. It's not using your GPU because it actually can't. The game runs on DX11, your card only supports DX10. Considering how old the 2800M is, I'm going to say that it's safe to assume that you're either running on a mobile C2D or first gen Core i3-i5? I almost want to call BS on your Skyrim statement (unless you're running at 640x480) because I have issues running the 2k mod and a few other eye candy mods on my pc which would run circles around yours (not trying to be a bully, just being real). Also, Skyrim is nothing like fallout 4 when it comes to CPU and GPU usage.

Actually I have an i7 and I play Skyrim at 1920x1200 on medium settings. But I'm upgrading to a Quadro K4000M so I'll be able to play soon. And the 2800 actually only goes to DX9, but I'm using a DX emulator to trick the game into thinking I have newer stuff. And if you're curious about the laptop itself, it's an HP Elitebook 8740w. And as for your last statement, I guess it was a litttle silly of me to think that even a beefed up Skyrim could compare to a next gen game like Fallout 4.

i5 4670K with R9 280 - same problem. The only way around it is to make an administrators account and play from there. That might not be the best solution as I have horrific load times - 2 to 3 minutes inside to outside. Since then I've uninstalled on my ssd and reinstalled on my hd. Still dowsn't recognize the video card. Considering asking for refund.

I'm in the same boat. Will run without a hitch for days, then suddenly just quits on start up, not identifing the graphics card that it's been using since I got the game 6 months ago. When it does work it lets me run the game on the "ultra" setting smooth as silk so I know my hardware is more than good enough! Be nice if ANYONE out there has a clue how to solve this! (right now I'm in "not working mode" even tho it work for over a week since the last time it did this....)

A workstation card and a DX emulator. There's your problem, workstation cards do not have driver support for games, they are also not made to run games. Besides, Skyrim's recommended GPU is far less powerful than Fallout 4's minimum. There's no reason to expect a 2800m nor a 4000m to even open the game.

This thread is old. And I'll have you know that I've enjoyed multiple playthroughs already at around 40 fps on my 4000m. Without a DX emulator. Also around 80 mods so far.

So does anyone actually have a fix for this problem? Everywhere I go the only replies to this issue are either "mine's broken too", "works fine for me", or they just spin off into unrelated tangents like here.
I don't care what you have or how well you can play Skyrim, I'm trying to get something fixed.

When the game launched last Nov I didn't have this issue, but then I reinstalled the game in Feb and started to have this issue. The game runs fine, but having it not detect my card is unsettling.

Your GPU is based off of the Nvidia 9800 gt and it's designed for workstations not gaming.

For those having this issue, do a completely clean install of your drivers.

Uninstall current drivers then hit up safe mode, use your preferred cleaning program to rid the system of older drivers and install paths. Remember- Google is your friend here.

Reboot and reinstall the latest drivers.

Before starting a new game, verify the game cache just to be sure, then launch using the default launcher (try to begin with no mods activated, and only activate once your hardware is recognised).

Still using 361.91 for a 980Ti, and no real issues.

As with all things 'new', it is not always better. Try back stepping your drivers (and always do clean installations)...
