Is it possible to main heavy weapons?
If I were to base my build around heavy weapons, would I have a reasonably good amount of ammo to do it, or is it basically impossible? If it's unlikely that I can make it work, is there any weapon/weapons that would be as fun?

I would say, "not at first". Ammo for the minigun for example, is really rare until you start to get into lvl 15ish range. And stuff like rockets are even more rare and/or really expensive. By later game though, yeah, I think it could be doable.

If you did minigun/lazer gatling, you could totally do it.
All the ammo is very easily accesible once you gain access to the prydwen (brotherhood of steal)

There's not a lot of heavy weapons / ammo in the first part of the game. If you want to main Heavy Weapons, you will need to rush over to the Cambridge Police Station and complete the quest Call to Arms. It's a fairly easy quest, and near the end there's a Junk Jet, which allows you to use junk items as ammunition. You can also pick them back up off the ground so you can re-use the ammo.

Then you'll have a primary you can use as much as you want.

By heavy weapons do you mean things like the Fat Man, Minigun, Flamer etc? If yes I feel like you would be very ammo deprived, I don't use them but the amount of ammo I find/have built up isn't enough to play the game fully with. There are locations you could farm ammo if you really wanted to, or you could spawn it in maybe but playing normally/legit I don't think it'd be possible to fully experience the game. I've been enjoying the .44 pistol personally but there are quite a few guns I've got that are fun. Junk Jet and Broadsider would probly be my most uniqe weapons atm. Hope that helps, Cheers! (I play without brotherhood of steel so maybe you could get ammo from there, I also don't use vendors as much)

I main a Gatling laser and it is possable , however its a rough start so I recommened using the 10MM pistol until you get some ammo for your desired heavy weapon or go unarmed until you reammy need that big gun. But yea the start is always rough for heavy's.

Great! in that case, does anyone know of a good build for this?
I was thinking something like
Strength 5 or 7
Perception 3, 4, or 5
endurance 3
charisma 6 (I hear it's important for local leader and passing "checks" for additional options, but since I lose out on content if I don't have high charisma, I'll probably just console this to 10)
intelligence 3 5 or 6 (I think high-tech mods are going to be used on the Gatling laser)
agility 2 (I'm guessing Gatling laser counts as an automatic weapon)
luck whatever's left
then increase endurance for the next 7 levels

Can I get some help improving upon this build?

I'd reccomend going to 7 in strength for the improved hip fire accuracy, and the increased carry weight since the heavy weapons will probly eat up a good bit of your inventory.

I'd say 5 for perception so you can buff up your explosive weaponry (If your using them, idk if you just wanna use the gatling etc.)

Is there anything you actually want from Endurance? Most of its pretty meh in my opinion besides that toughness boost, the rest is pretty situational and depends on your playstyle. Ofc the boosted AP is nice but just want to hear your thoughts.

Local Leader is nice if your going to actually use the settlements, I've got 20 settlements with most of them linked so I get my moneys worth but its up to you in that regard. There are some checks but for a couple of them you can wear Charisma+ clothes and slip by, but up to you if you wanna console it since you do lose out on some checks.

I assume as the Gatling Laser is a laser you'll want science, you might want to go farther for the radiation+ damage and there is one quest where it'll speed it up but your call in that regard.

Gatling laser is automatic but what I'm not sure about is if it will stack with the heavy weapon buff under strength. Someone else know/tested it yet?

I think you only start out with like 10-15 points in the beginning but idk how many you want to console in/when you want to go full heavy build

Why do you like endurance so much? Just curious, I understand if its for the AP boost to run farther etc but most of the perks seem very niche playstyle wise.

Hope this helps, cheers.

Always have a second combat skill. Being able to diversify your armament is very important.

If you want Heavy Weapons, I do suggest either Melee or Commando as your mainstay. Melee is free from weapon restrictions, and Commando works great as a mainstay when using a heavy weapon isn't warranted (eg, not in power armor raiding a supermutant base or major quest fight)

Heavy weapons are, in particular, one of those things you use when power armor is warranted. If you want to blow up ghouls and molerats with rockets.. well.. have deep pockets.

I only wanted to put points into endurance for the increased health, since I'll probably be close to enemies. Is that not a good idea?
Kilroyiv Nov 13, 2015 @ 8:51pm
I was stupid and didn't realize endurance boosted health. Ignore me :conwayfacepalm:. Yes it's a good idea to boost health seeing how innacurate the Minigun etc. are for long range combat. Idk if 7 points is quite neccesary but you'll see as you play if you need to go that far.

Alright, I modified my build a bit. I'm now thinking more along the lines of
Strength 7
Perception 5
endurance 3
charisma 1
intelligence 6
agility 1
luck 2
with 3 points left over.
Using rifles as my main/ranged weapon and machine guns/ rocket launchers as my boss killing/mob clearing weapons.

Firstly, what should I use those 3 extra points on? perception might be good for extra accuracy, agility would be good for sneaking and AP, and luck would be great for drop chance (would help a lot with ammo concerns, among other things).

Secondly, what should my first level up points be spent on?

Bump?
Kilroyiv Nov 15, 2015 @ 9:41pm
You can just use showSPECIALmenu in the console to continually test it out ingame, sorry I can't really help more as I've not done a heavy build. Just to make sure you know, Perception only affects VATS accuracy, and Luck doesn't affect Drop Chance only the amount of ammo you find AFAIK. Good Luck!
