Pip Boy Android app battery drain
Hi,

I absolutely love the Pip Boy app for Android. I can't see myself ever playing the game without it - it's just so much easier to manage my inventory, tune the radio, fast travel to locations, etc without having to pause the game, and I really hope more games integrate mobile devices in a similar fashion.

However, this app is one serious battery hog - I keep my device plugged into the mains while playing and the battery still drains faster than the wall can charge my device.

I mainly use a first gen (2012) Nexus 7 for its bigger screen, but it takes less than 3 hours for the battery to go to zero even though I have it plugged into the wall with the proper 2-amp tablet charger.

When my tablet runs out of juice, I switch to my phone, a Nexus 5. Same problem - drains faster than it can charge, though it can last for more than 4 hours since its battery is newer and hasn't lost so much of its max capacity. Worse still, my phone gets HOT, much more so than my tablet does. I avoid using the phone for the Pip Boy if I can because it's my only phone and I don't want it to suffer heat damage.

I'm a little baffled as to why the app drains battery so rapidly, because it doesn't look like a particularly demanding program - no fancy 3D visuals or HD videos. In fact, I've played 3D games on my devices while plugged in and they didn't drain faster than they could charge, nor did they get this hot. Same thing for videos - I can watch anime on my tablet without plugging it in and it still doesn't drain so quickly and that's without a charger to help.

Does anyone else have the same issue? How about iOS users?

Oh yes indeed! I stoppped using using my S3 for that very reason. :rshocked:
I'm using the Galaxy Tab II permamently plugged in to the charger with no problems.

So when you run on your Galaxy Tab plugged in, it doesn't drain faster than it charges?

It might be an issue with my Nexus 7's stock wall adapter (that bulky 2-amp thingy) in that case. I'll see if I can borrow my friend's iPad wall adapter and check.

Update: Tried the iPad wall adapter and the drain while using the app is slower than it was before, but still faster than the device can be recharged (for both my Nexus 5 and my first-gen Nexus 7). Both devices are running CyanogenMod 12.1.

I also tried using my friend's iPad 2 (ancient one with a 1024x768 resolution) and its Wi-Fi actually had serious disconnection issues (as in disconnecting from the LAN, not from the game) so I couldn't test its battery drain.
