Is there a way to rotate objects vertically?
Was trying to put some roofs on the existing houses in sactuary but theyre not flat so you cant really lay them down and make it work. I know how to rotate them horizontally but is there anyway to do it vertically so u can lay roofs on the slanted slopes of the existing houses?

Not that in aware of.

This would also be handy for laying fences on hill sides - currently one side of the fence will float.

Nope i'm afraid, the placement system is currently garbage. However, you can place foundations into the ground.

Yeah i know itd be really nice, i ran into the floaty fence issue myself. I was thinking great idea for a mod to add the vertical rotation and maybe a top down view for managing settlements too would be a nice addition. Thanks for the info.

I place them on the edge of a table of something, so they can fall and land and be position as I want to. You need a lil bit of luck but after that you can grab them and place them.
Really annoying I admit

Thats a pretty good idea hadnt thought of that. Right now im kinda getting OCD about it and dont even really want to play cause of this one stupid issue. I didnt know the game was going to be such a management sim. I just wanted to get in and do some quests.

I had the same problem but i fixed it. You simply hold "Q" while trying to place your object

open console with the button next to 1 or ö. click the object and write "modangle (x, y or z) (number for degrees)" without the " and () then you can adjust the height with modpos z (number)

This is an AutoHotKey script that inputs the item manipulation commands for you.

awesome thank you both very helpful info.
It's a difficult process unless you are lucky and the roof follows an axis. If it doesn't you'll spend hours trying to get the right angle and it'll never be perfect. Sancturary's roofs don't follow the axes, so it takes a lot of tweaking. The Boathouse and Lighthouse settlements do.

YO I am SUPER late to replying to this...but there must be SOME option for PC keyboard/mouse users most definitely because I JUST found out with Fallout 4 Vanilla for PC...at least with a controller you can click down on the left toggle and it changes the axis it rotates on. You still have to play with it a LITTLE...but we are talking like 15 seconds and not...5-30 mins of Fockery =D Hope that helps anyone else who comes across this question in the future

Use mod 'Place Everywhere' and with Ctrl-key you can toggle through 3 axis. Alt-key toggles between world-coords and player-coords.
