I hate Preston Garvey's voice

I don't usually like to complain about minor issues in games and making a game like this a big enough job that I'd think it was churlish to harp on every bug or detail.

But on this occasion I can't contain myself: The fellow who voiced Preston Garvey (Jon Gentry) did a terrible job and he's a terrible actor.

He has a complete lack of patter (conversational rhythm), he ends sentences flat when they're clearly meant to incline upward. He stops and starts in a way that suggests every line is a surprise to him.

Who was the director for his recording? How did they deem this acceptable? Were there no second takes? Or, by god, is this the level of quality he got to after trying really hard and improving?

Listening to Garvey talk is like teaching a teenager to drive stick-shift: you have go limp and relax your neck to avoid a hernia from the clumsy puttering.

It pains me to criticize the work of a fellow black man in such a visible role but this was bad enough that its almost insulting to my sense of social responsibility, there are so many skilled black voice actors and actors that it actually hurts to know this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ edged out what could've been stellar.

I changed the way I play the game just to avoid having to listen to this terrible, embarrassing performance.

Some of the voice actor choices were... skimped out on? I mean as much as I love Rick and Morty the voice used for the radio host makes me irritated.

I agree. His voice acting completely ruined the immersion for me. I too do not understand how it made the final cut. Oh well...

Yeah its pretty bad. Totally agree. The Mama lady (whatever her name is) is also annoying, but I like the guy who lost his son (he feels relatable since you lost yours too at the start of the game) and the lady who is skeptical of you. She has a bit of a hispanic accent.

Thank you for putting into words my sheer disbelief at how poor the voice acting is for a major character in this game. I was floored when I first met Preston and heard him talk.

I'm no fan of hyperbole when it comes to knocking voice actors. I often chide those who claim that they could do a better job than Mark Meer did in the original Mass Effect (not a strong performance, but by no means a horrible one). But I'm genuine when I say that almost anyone could've done a better job than Preston's VA. It genuinely sounds like the voice actor is struggling to read the script.

And like you say, there are so much better black actors, even in this very game! It's mind boggling. I can only guess that Preston's VA was some local celebrity in Bethesda's area that I've never heard of, or the friend/son/brother of a prominent employee.

He's already voicing some of the characters in the game, but only 3 as opposed to the TONS of characters he voiced in New Vegas. My favorite was Boxcars.

Bump. One of the most annoying NPC followers I've ever experienced. Over the past week, I found myself enjoying Fallout 4 less. I couldn't quite figure out why. Then it dawned on me. It was because Preston was following me around. His drab, monotone voice. His humorless personality. HIs constant nagging about the "Minutemen". I got rid of him today.. pumped his affinity up in one hour to get the perk and dumped him. Ugh, never again.. stay in Sanctuary.

I thought his voice was okay. It was most certainly monotone, but I looked past that and it doesn't really bother me. He's a lot like Moira Brown; both characters are seen as annoying by the community, but there is a handful of people who like the character, such as Brian Delaney.

On X6-88's defence: Coursers are supposed to talk that way. Just try and chat with any other courser and he'll speak with the same tone of voice and rythm as X6-88.

I didn't enjoy Preston's voice acting either. It was not HORRIBLE, but it fell short for such a major character.

Thank you for creating this topic SagaciousNJ, his voice acting was so bad that not only does it ruin part of the experience of the game and ruin a character and ruin part of a faction, but it made me comment on this topic because I finally figured out part of the reason why people do not like Preston and why he seems so robotic and so boring (even the synths and robots seem less robotic than Preston).

I hope that Bethesda gets a new voice actor to redo Preston's dialogue in the game, and that they will not use this voice actor again; and that they will not make this mistake again in the future.

Who approved his voice work for this character?

Maybe that person should be replaced as well. :D

oh god the guy that irritates me is the jiu lang guy or whatever his name is. cosntantly crying over his ♥♥♥♥♥♥ life. yeah im sorry that happened and i wish you well but dont stand there and tell me over and over your sob story while im trying to work at my armor bench.
but it still doesnt annoy me more than the 2 second dialogue that you have to go through each time you click a character.
