Fallout 4
.308 or .50 caliber on Sniper Rifle?
So I've noticed that my once op sniper rifle is starting to fall off a little bit in terms of damage, so I was wondering if it'd be worth it to upgrade to the .50 cal reciever. Is the ammo common on later difficulties or would it be cheaper/more manageable to stay on .308, since the damage increase isn't that huge?

Guys! The Overseer's Guardian, go get it!

^ For those who don't know, buy it at vault 81.
I use the Overseers Guardian, a .45 rifle that fires an extra projectile.
I have this modified to do 132DMG (this is per projectile) so it does a rather fine amount of damage. it also has a very light recoil and can be fired multiple times withoutt reloading thanks to it's semiautomatic system.
Definitely loving my gauss rifle, with all stealth perk multipliers maxed including deacon's companion perk you reach 6.3x multiplier and I just one shot a mirelurk queen in the face on survival mode with a fully modded non legendary gauss rifle. Here's to hoping someone makes a high level mod for fallout 4 like there was for skyrim. It was also at night which gave me an extra 5% damage putting my gauss rifle at 503 damage so it did some stupid amount of damage. Min maxing snipe build is phun, gotta find me an instigating or two shot gauss rifle now.

The damage amount includes the extra bullet. I used console command to create a weapon with this perk and the damage listed doubled when I made it. So, if your weapon says "132 dmg" then that's what it does WITH the extra bullet, not double, or 264.
.50 cal is awesome no idea what everyone is smoking.

If you can't OHK with it (am playing at lvl 60 now) then you're doing something wrong. Sure Gauss Rifle has the highest base damage but the ammunition is so rare and expensive that you can't use it as a primary engagement weapon. You more or less save it for the super elites if you don't mind carrying around that heavy piece of equipment (and my guess you would only use it when riding a PA).

Luck + Perception + Agility (and guns & bullets) will allow you to deal tremendous amounts of balistic damage plus the bonus to disarm & crippling limbs. Add the 50% bonus from silenced weapons (you can't silence beam weapons) and the 3.5x sneak multiplier and you can snipe anything with OHK with the .50 cal.

My fully upgraded .50 cal hunting rifle does 64 damage and my fully upgraded .308 combat rifle does 90...This is without any damage adding perks and identical upgrades. Also, my .50 cal is a legendary that ignores 30% of enemies armor, but the combat rifle still out-performs it. That realism yo.
Wait, do weapons have random damage? My .50 cal rifle does 100-something.
nah its better to use Overseer's Guardian (unique Combat Rifle) with .308 reciever (you can buy it in Vault 81)

deals A LOT more damage than .50 cal sniper rifle and its semi automatic so no bolt pulling

in fact Combat Rifle is a lot better sniper rifle overall

Ok let's lay this ♥♥♥♥ to rest. .50 hunting rifle is better than .308 hunting rifle. Period. Strictly within the confines of upgrading the bolt action hunting rifle, .50 cal is superior.

BUT, once you have gun nut 4, the .308 combat rifle is FAR superior. Comparable damage, possibly more damage with specific weapons, and no bolt action.

If you invest more in energy weapons, the guass rifle is also superior.

Don't bother with a plasma sniper. I tried it. Projectile moves too slow. Laser snipers work pretty great though.

That's my regular sniping action. 45 rounds doing 168 dmg usually end the argument pretty quickly. When it absolutely positively must lay down with one round, though, I go back to camp for the rapid shielded gauss. ;)
.50 is strong, but not all that common.
Is .50 Cal common? No. It's almost as rare as 10mm.

But higher level areas are more likely to spawn .50 Cal ammo, and you can always buy plenty of whatever you need.

Sell ammo you don't use to exchange for calibers you want. Make use of settlements to make money, or even just spend those caps you make looting places. There's no reason you shouldn't be able to afford ammo later into the game.

Keep in mind that you get a hunting rifle ages earlier than a combat rifle. I mean higher level weapons would be pointless if lower level weapons would still outclass them in dmg, no?

Also you need higher levels in gun nut and science perk to fully mod a combat rifle, while the hunting rifle is full modded easier.

The Meterial Sniper rifle in FONV was .50 cal.
Be sure to get the scrounger perk

I give myself the scrounger perk first, that way I start the game finding extra ammo for guns I don't have yet, that way, when I DO find/craft a gun that uses that ammo, I've already got a stockpile of it
