Exclamation Mark Problem with Settlements
So, I have an exclamation mark in the Pip-boy over Abernathy farm, but when I check to which of the resources it applies, there's no exclamation mark there. Only over the settlement name, not for one of the specific resources. How am I supposed to find out what's wrong here?

You'll have an exclamation mark on your pipboy if your defense level is lower than your food + water level.
Even if you don't need such a high defense to make your citizens happy or prevent raids.

Defense is 21, Food 10, Water 9. There's NO exclamation mark over defense. Just over the settlement name in general... That's the problem.

No idea then.
Maybe you have unaffected guard posts ?

All guard posts are assigned; defense is high enough

This problem keeps repeating itself, in other settlements as well. Exclamation marks without any clear reason...

Had the same issue, and also had the down-pointing red arrow of decreasing happiness. When the exclamation isn't next to a need, then it's something that they "want." Try adding decorations. I added a couple of pictures and a rug, but when I added the jukebox, it all turned around. You'd think survival and safety would be enough, but noooo...

I get ! marks even at Sanctuary. Where my Defense is 38 or so from plunking down a pile of turrets, and my food/water stats are 9 and 7. It has yet to be attacked.

I believe that means that there is a quest to be had there. You might need to run around your whole settlement to find out who is giving it, but every time that I have had the ! by the town but not by any resource I got a kidnapping quest from one of the settlers. (The specific quest giver was sometimes hard to find, though, so I had to ring the bell and make them come to me for it to trigger.)

Oh, and I should add that all of the settlers would comment about me being there to help or ask if I was with the minutemen, but only one specific person could trigger the quest.

When this happened to me, it was because although I had sufficient beds, they were not accessible to the settlers. I rearranged some sleeping bags and resolved the issue. You can observe if this is the case by watching the settlers after midnight and seeing if all of them go to sleep. Note that settlers on guard duty usually stay on guard duty.

Then there's the ! mark by the water/ food. 0 water/food indication and when you go to the settlement it has plenty of water. Example: 10 settlers, 20+ units of water. Status shows zero before going to said settlement. Then there's the settlement on the map indicats 38 people. Get there and it's to "normal" levels.

I've come to the conclusion settlements just need attention. Kind of like a high maintenance...errrm..significant other. Me Me Me!

Good job digging up a topic two months old.

Totally false. Settlers after a period of time will teleport to their destination. This is to avoid the horrible pathfinding the AI has for settlers.

What you think is a settler standing there is not the settler, as soon as you interact they disapear and appear in their beds.

The workshop data gets corrupt as soon as you exit the landblock. Then only thing to be careful of is the bed shortage, should try making enough beds for double your population so when it does this glitch it will not drag your happiness down.

I had that problem and I think it was because I cleaned up the settlement and built some things before any settlers were there. On the pip boy it would show I had 0 of whatever but when I would go to the settlement it would show how many I really had and the exclamation would go away.

Then when you leave the exclamation comes back sometimes so it is a bug I think.
