This is my first fallout, im not sure if this is new or not, but i dont really understand how the password hacking works

i just pick random words and the likeness goes up or down

what does it mean by likeness?

Likeness indicates how similar the word you chose is to the actual password. For instance, Likeness=1 means that in the word you picked, one letter is both correct and in the right position.

you pick one word and you see how many letters are matching to the right one. i.e you take BILLS and the real one would be HILLS it would say "4 out of 5 correct".

Its like those games where you pick a sequence and it tells you how many characters from that sequence match the "actual" answer.

So lets say the password is "thinking"

"guessing" would be another option (both have 8 characters). You click guessing, and it tells you that 3 characters match.

You have 4 attempts.

likeness is how many letters (position matters) are the same.

so, getting zero likeness can actually help, as it means the actual password isn't anything close to what you picked.

you have to check for marked nonsense with your mouse cursor, when its thick marked you gotta click on it, it may remove a word or fill up your backup "try agains" do that until you find the word, passwords sometimes have to do something with the area where you are, like whe you are in a hospital look for a medical word.

Yes, as someone said 4 attempts.

But, unlike prior fallout games, you are not locked out permanently for failure.
One just has to wait 10 or so seconds and the terminal resets and you can try
again for 4 more guess's.
I've yet to find one I qualify to work on to fail to get in. Just takes a couple minutes or
so of trying.
Prior titles we had to resort to mods or using console to cheat when perm locked.
No need to do that sillyness here.

and sometimes the passwords make sense in that situation. so it could be that the password to a bunker would be SHELTER i.e

Ahh; is it confirmed that the 10sec lock is on all hacking terminals? please don't spoil anything, im only a few hours/quests in; but I assumed that 10sec grace was only on that first terminal that you encounter, as sort-of a tutorial terminal. But, it would seem you are only ever locked out 10sec??

I actually don't really like this. =/ I don't like a perma lock; but maybe more like 10min of real time would seem more balanced to me... with only a 10sec lock, you need only have the hacking skill and be willing to waste the 2min clicking on random entry's... that's too easy...

if I was going to guarantee get through each terminal; then id rather a fun lil mini game, than the current guessing game...

like play Snake or something till you collect enough nodes... etc...
