If you're in build mode, just highlight them and select command. Then highlight the food and assign them to it.

You can assign people to different tasks like farming, guarding, scavenging, assign a bed etc. when you are in the settlement build mode and hover your cursor over the person, then you see the contextual menu at the bottom. "E" is to order him to do something, then go to that thing like the crops, hover over it and press "E" again to assign him to it. Make sure it's something where the little person symbol is red. Because a green person indicates someone is already assigned to it.

It is possible to assigned 1 person to multible jobs of the same type.

IE: 1 person can work all your plants (even though you have to assigned them to each differnt type of plant they are to work on) and 1 person assigned to all security outposts.

But only a settler can only do 1 store job and wont be able to handle anything else.

Update: Settlers on farms will only work upto 6 units of food.
