Just take whathever equipped weapons or armor they have out of their trade menu and give them what you want them to use. Should work.

well nicks weapon is not in his inventory.

Also it would be nice if they said what guns they like
Soul Nov 12, 2015 @ 8:43am
Press t to make them equip it
Cynath Nov 12, 2015 @ 8:43am
the equipped ones do not show bud. equip something else and then you'd see it pop up.

This doesn't seem to work for pipper?
I tell her to equip a submachine gun, she does. No gun appears in the inventory.
When we then start shooting she pulls out her Pistol again and only use this? Is there something I'm missing?

you NEED to provide proper AMMO for the gun u want em to equip. Followers/companion will consume ammo when using guns other than their default one. Once ammo is depleted they switch back to the default gun

Companions that can equip weapons have their own weapon that they start with, like Piper's 10mm pistol, and will switch to this if they run out of ammo for whatever weapon you give them. This weapon also will not appear in their inventory nor can it be taken from them. To equip them with a weapon or piece of armor, put it in their inventory, then, in their inventory, select the item and press "t" if you're on keyboard, Y if you're using an Xbox controller, or Triangle if you're using a PS4 controller.

Is there certain weapons that the companions just can't use?
Tried giving piper a Submachine gun but she kept switching back to 10mm pistol? (I did giver her the ammo the gun used)

Thanks i didn't get this either. So why do companions need ammo for weapons, but they don't need fusion cores for power armor? Does that make any sense? way to confuse me fallout

What sucks is that I gave Piper a rifle that had unlimited ammo (special weapon) and she still uses her damn pistol. I'll see if the ammo trick works, but she better not deplete my .50 ammo reserves.

No gun has unlimited ammo. If you are using a gun with "Unlimited Ammo Capacity", that means it uses all you ammo in the clip meaning you don't have to reload.

Thanks; didn't realize that.

What really confused me is that another 10mm pistol needs ammo for piper. I am confused.

that does confuse me a lot. It works this way for all companions. I wish there was a screen where you could see their total stats and whether or not they even have SPECIAL stats or if they just have some abstracted values based on their level. Part of that is because I don't know if it is worth it giving them upgraded armor and I don't know how good their sneak is and stuff like that.

I don't know of an easy way to check all of a companion's perks (though I think in general they sneak as well as you except for the annoying times they teleport into the middle of a bunch of enemies when you go through a door), but on PC you can use the console to click on an NPC (including companions), and then type for example "getav strength" to check what their strength is.
