Armor upgrading
Hi, this might be a stupid question and I've already tried google but I don't understand why i can improve only certain armour (not toalking about the power suit). For example, I like the drifter outfit, can I improve the armor rating through crafting or will it just stay that way? I find the heavy and medium armors rather ugly. Cheers.

so you need to find an armorer bench, you can modify armor peices that go on top of light armor, or modify bigger armor as well if you have the perks for it

I guess some are armor and some are just clothes? idk really. Took me a little while to even understand armor in this game. First time i saw "raider left leg" i thought it was literally the guys leg.

So bad you can't attach armor to some clothing, though. Have this wonderful Nomad cloak that would've been even better with the leather shestpiece and leg armor - yet, it has no free slots for those...

I can only seem up upgrade very few armors I find, most of them don't show up in the upgrade screen. Then again, I haven't taken Armorer perk, maybe every armor becomes modable when you do, I'm not sure.

Sadly, even if you can upgrade things, they can only go so far until you need to ditch them for a better variant. I'm at a point in the game (level 8 only) where I'm running into Super Mutants and androids and I'm struggling, so i think Power armor (which I've found quite a bit of thankfully) might be the way forward from here on out.

Think as some as overalls and stuff that goes over it.

Valut tech suit is one example you can improve it, but still wear it under armour.

And you need armourer perk too, some if I remember right need science.

Also, the game's armor system still is a step forward in comparison to F3 and New Vegas - though, to be fair, there were some mods for those that did it even better by giving us separate armor and clothing pieces that can be attached any way you like, including putting a ranger's duster over some armor and so on. And yeah, despite being a step forward from the previous installments, it still is a 12-hour marathon distance backwards from the Morrowind equipment system (a game on this same engiine, by the by).

For those dreaming of a full set of either Combat or Hvy Combat armour the sets are incomplete, can't remember about the others.

Thanks for the help, I guess I'll try putting some perks in armor crafting to see if it has any effect.

Mini spoils..... Be sure to do a few Railroad missions. They have someone who can teach you to upgrade clothing with ballistic fiber. Adds a whole new option in armor benches for several clothing items including hats, outfits, and underfits.
