Any way to get a npc quest giver to stop attacking you?

Sully Mathis asked me to drain 3 pipes in the Thicket Excavations, then when I hit the switch we were attacked by some mirelurks. After the battle he got knocked down by the mirelurks and when he got up he started shooting at me.

Is there anyway to make him become friendly again. I have a quest to turn into him but I can't do it when he is shooting at me.

Run away (a long way away) and don't come back - or even go near the area - for three days. Then he might have reset.
