fallout 4 saves OneDrive
Fallout 4 saves locations
C:\Users\(username)\Documents\My Games\Fallout4\Saves
OneDrive\Documents\My Games\Fallout4\Saves

okay so yup, had to reinstall windows 10 pro after I acquired 2 new SSDs 250g each (samsungs 850 evo, wont let me raid 0, you bastards!! bad sata driver controllers, no fix) it was time to retire my old velociraptors. so I backed up my F4 saves, started and finished the OS install and downloaded F4 (using second ssd for my steam install and steam games). when I went to move the files back I noticed that there was no "C:\Users\%username%\Documents\My Games\Fallout4\" to move the saves back to. so I was confused and wondered why my save games was still in the game right after the F4 reinstall without doing a thing. so I did a file search for fallout4.ini and I found it in "OneDrive\Documents\My Games\Fallout4" wallah, there it was.

this posting is to let people know where your F4 save files might be just incase it stops using the old save location.

I also want to know if this is stable? will I have to worry about losing the files? or they're in the cloud and all is well? time to play more F4

WIndows 10. Enough said.
Yeah i'm also annoyed that Win10 tries to take control of my Documents folder, I'm looking for a fix right now because OneDrive keeps syncing save files all the time while i'm playing ;D

Find your OneDrive in the notification area >> Right Click >> Settings >> Auto Save >> Documents >> This PC Only

Win10 here, my saves are in C:/User. No OneDrive saves.

OP, did you setup your OneDrive to sync your documents folder? Did you change any OneDrive settings? I want to avoid this potential problem. I'd just like to know how it happened.

User doesn't take the time to properly setup onedrive (including configuring what folders you want to share).

User blames developer.

I want to bump this post, as I had the exact same issue after installing Office 365 on my PC and accidentally turning on OneDrive as part of the process. After booting Fallout for the first time, I went to the launcher menu, toggled some settings, but then quit without playing. Steam tried to cloud sync my files, but was stuck at 0% for a long time. So, I just turned my computer off, feeling that nothing had changed worth syncing. When I booted the game again, I had lost ~3 hours of gameplay. Still working to see if I can get that back. Thanks for the info!

Also, I want to respond directly to this comment. OneDrive gives no indication in the setup process that it's going to make these types of changes, and even savvy computer users would not expect OneDrive to simply mutilate your Documents folder for their cloud sync agenda. In the past, when I used OneDrive, it simply backed up the file structure that I already had instead of changing the directory structure on my hard drive. That being the previous case, I didn't expect something different in the future when it was simply a checkbox on a greater install wizard.

That line of thinking "user blames developer" makes sense when you're talking about business applications or more technical development situations. In 2016, it's not acceptable to create confounding situations for typical users. I can blame the developer because it can be expected that a program does not require configuration before a basic install, only later when I want to changed the default settings. Also, if the default settings are going to be destructive, it should be explicitly stated.

is it possible to change the save path from C:\Users\(username)\Documents\My Games\Fallout4\Saves to another drive ?
i need my ssd space back !

I never really understood why some titles put their saves and configuration in the Documents folders.. For one there's the whole issue of permissions in those directories, Secondly it makes more sense to just keep the saves in the game's actual folders. Particularly when you try to micromanage your storage space and things being installed to a completely different drive is annoying.

One Drive is NOT a save destination. One Drives COPIES files from a location to save them in a cloud. By default it automatically copies anything in the default user folder, documents, saved games, pictures, etc.

in other words it aint controlling anything, it is just copying files.

This is an old post, but IIRC, OneDrive was moving files under the Documents directory around. Typically, a cloud save program doesn't do anything of this sort, so Bored Peon, you would be right in most cases. It was just an aggressive but poorly executed cloud save program. I turn One Drive off now and use other services.

Thenais, I don't know anything about where to change saves to... Perhaps someone could make a little script to Archive old saves to another drive? Purely hypothetical, but that would be cool.

Vyvyn Crux, on other systems it's really typical to only put dynamic, chancing data like that under the user's directory *only*. Windows has been trying to shift that direction... poorly. For exactly the reasons you described!

Hmm mine onyl copied the files, then I got tired of it doign that so I just disabled and uninstalled it.
