Storing Items?
Can you store your items in any crate without the risk of those items getting stolen? say for example you decide to keep all items scavenge in Red Rocket, if you don't post guards and stuff, will they get stolen?

No... It says in the in-game help that only storage in a room or house you own is safe. I don't know if storage you build in a settlement you are running counts. The game doesn't specify, but i wouldn't risk it... that being said, the workshop storage for any settlement is infinite, doesn't discriminate about what you can store in it and nothing there gets lost ever so you can use that.

I store all my extra stuff in a postbox in Sanctuary Hills (my first settlement). I'm lvl 13 and no one stole an item from me so far.

Later I'll add a few container to sort stuff (like "stuff to sell" or separate weapons from armors etc).

They won't get stolen. But they'll disappear. You can store it in a workshop though if you don't want to build a shack with a safe in it.

At the very least, the storage you *make* is safe.

The pre-existing stuff outside settlements - you'll lose anything you leave in storage once the cell resets.

The pre-existing stuff inside settlements you control - don't know.

Well a house i cleared out in sancuary reset so I think that isn't safe perhaps one you build is fine? :wasted:

You can ignore the above people - I have a bathtub full of pre-war money that has withstood the test of time. Which is about 60 hours now. Not stolen or disappeared without a single settler at the settlement.

Bathtubs aren't "containers"

Did further testing. Found a random cooler in the wastes and stored 2 brain fungus within it. Ran around questing for 3 in game days came back and the fungus was still there. So yes - items are persistent in this game and will not disappear. Also to note, when I arrived to place the brain fungus there were no enemies. When i returned all enemy spawns had been reset and the fungus remained.

This seems a lot like Skyrim regarding how items behave. Storing items in containers is risky because often the containers reset, but i've found guns lying out in the open that i dropped hours ago, the same way a floating axe was still floating in the same spot over a hundred hours later in a Skyrim game i ran.

So yeah. Throw your crap in a bathtub.

It's probably 7 days in game time to reset, wasn't that the case for Skyrim? If i store things in say, the cellar in Sanctuary in the safe there once unlocked and cleared out, and come back to that place every few days and put ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ in it, I wouldn't be suprised if 7 days after initially visiting there the first time it will be all gone and there will be some new ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ in the safe. BUT maybe not, as it was a chest I had to unlock and which game logic wise I can't imagine will be refilled, but then again maybe it will. I should store some of the already read magazines and stuff I don't know what to do with and report back.

I've had a problem, though, that with the containers I've built in the sanctuary town area, in a house or near the workshop, and that i've stored GUNS in it, such as the mini gun, which weighs a ton, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ such as that grumpy ♥♥♥♥♥ Jung or whatever her name is, they run and GRAB the minigun out of the chest at the sight of even a ♥♥♥♥♥ radroach, ussualy spend a ton of ammo missing alot until someone else kills it, and then proceed to ''holster'' the weapon and go on back with their chores, rather than use her .38 pistol. Is this because I put the ammo in there? I've sinced noticed ammo doesn't weigh anything, so perhaps if i don't leave them with ammo they won't do it - but it's still a worry, because I am collecting some awesome guns and I honestly have no ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ idea where to store them, as i fear the AI will just grab them out of the chest and there isn't really any external area with a locked door or anything that you ''own''.. (but it's becoming unviable to carry launchers/fatman and where the ♥♥♥♥ do you store them, i've found 2 unique fatmen with awesome capabilities but i dont have a need for either atm, i dont even have much ammo for either and i'm constantly carrying too much)

I guess the question also should be - Is it safe to store items in the workshop inventory? Will the AI grab guns from the workshop inventory if they need it and have ammo available for it? as they always steal my power armor if i leave a FCore in it lol, but if i take it out, they leave the armor alone..
