Pillars of Community *Minor Spoilers*

Is there any way to get through this event without killing the "innocents"? I'm role-playing as a noble on their high horse so even though they're crazy cultists I feel it would be out of character to continue after massacre'ing them all. But as far as I can tell the only way to get through the event is either to walk away, give all your stuff, leave them stranded if you talk your way out or just kill everyone as they all attack if you kill the "leader". Has anyone found a way to get rid of the supposed leader without having to kill the ignorant idiots as well?

I just gave the leader all of my stuff and now I don't know what to do. I tried looking this up but all i came to was this. I can't try to kill them because they have everything i own, including stimpaks. Im so screwed

Actually no worries. Just kill him with your fist, shouldn't be too hard. He didn't magically put your goods in a locker or anything, everything you just gave him is on his body. So as long as you can kill him before the others show up you can just grab everything off of him and re-equip it before they show up (the magic of game menus).

Yea I only played along because I thought I'd be going through some religious adventure in the wasteland but I guess it was just a scam. If you successfully threaten him before he takes your stuff he says 'You're not worth the trouble. Get out of here before I change my mind.' Or something like that.

Yeah the same. I thought if you gave him your stuff you were going to be carted down below to work in a mine as a slave and be forced to break out, or find yourself stuck in the middle of a nutty cult and have to secret your way out. But nope, not even a five-minute diversion.

I'm enjoying the game but this definitely felt like the biggest missed oppurtunity in it I've run across that there wasn't more to this.

Just did this recently. I do not know of the full repercussions of it yet...
But, I did the speak check. walked out. Walked up the embankment. Turned around, pulled out my sniper rifle, and put a .50 directly between Brother James eyes.
He is dead, the rest of the commune is not aggro to me.

Interesting. Either it's a bug or a purposeful use of the stealth system. Do the others say anything about his death or do they just go on acting like nothings changed? Because if it's the former there might be some interesting interactions, but if it's the latter it was probably just a workaround that was never ironed out that let you break the rules a bit.
