Fallout 4 -- Crashes on startup with black screen and 'Fallout 4 has stopped working' box
Okay, so I upgraded my PC and here are the specs (all the drivers have been updated as well)

-Windows 7 x64
-NVIDIA Geforce 950 graphics card
-8 GB RAM
-AMD Athlon 3.7 GHZ Quad core processor
-1 TB Hard drive

When I press play on the launcher, a black screen pops up and says Fallout 4 has stopped working (with the whole troubleshooting thing) and I never get to the loading screen.
I have validated the files, restarted Steam, updated all the drivers, and restarted my computer but nothing works.
Please help :(

Lots are having this issue including me. I have done all the troubleshooting and updated drivers just reinstalled steam and downloading again. Other than that I'm taking it back and buying this for xbox bc I have spent over a day trying to deal with this

I know how you feel. I've been pissed all day because I can run the game in Ultra settings but I can't play it because of this stupid start up ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. My brother has the PS4 version but I don't want to get so far into the game then the PC version works and I have to start over.

Same thing happened with me but i have a 3k monitor, so after choosing windowed/ borderless in the launch menu options I changed game resolution to 1920/1080 then WHILE the game was launched I went to display in the windows control panel and changed my display resolution to 1920/1080 thus forching the game to fullscreen

You may be able to do the same even if it will be a lower resolution, either way it's worth a try

It's definitely not a resolution issue, unless it's a resolution issue AND something else. I've tried windowed, windowless, bordered, borderless, different resolutions, everything.

Damn it seems like you got the short end of the stick then, hopefully bethesda releases a patch soon, this release was pretty disappointing

Im super PO with Bethesda for still being unable to sort this issue, ive tried every bug fix thats trending the internet and yet i still havent seen the main menu of FO4. I have a i5-2500 Cpu @ 3.3GHz 3.3GHz, an Nvidia GTX 750 Ti, 16Gb ram and windows 10. ive updated and then backdated drivers, ive played with permissions and fire wall, ive gone into the preferences, uplugged monitors, fiddled with 3D settings and yet i still havent seen a loading screen.

Same here tried everything to no avail. ♥♥♥♥ is nonsense.

I have a Nvidia 860M and game always crashed after start screen (when loading icon appears bottom left). Fix was to *down*grade the nvidia drivers to 355.98 (fix worked for at least three others as well). This may work for some other nvidia cards as well, but no positive feedback yet.

EDIT: Only works in windowes/borderless mode. Fullscreen results in black screen/ctd.

I'm trying to reinstall and see if that works, I'll try other fixes if nothing happens, and will respost here if something finally works. Other than that.. hope for Bethesda to actually fix the issue..

This is just uancceptable. Almost a week after release and so many people still can't even start the game. I'll wait until this evening, still no patch that fixes this issue and i will demand a refund. I will not aid Bethesda economically for this - it's a matter of principal.
The only language they understand is the cashflow language. After almost one week they haven't cared enough to even COMMENT this issue on their forums and that alone is enough for me to demand a refund.

UPDATE: Finally got it to work! It was a major pain in the ass, but I finally fixed the issue. My problem wasn't my graphics/motherboard/sound drivers or the game version. It was my WINDOWS version that was the problem. I had a corrupted system file that wouldn't allow me to update my windows version with windows update, so I used the Microsoft help desk and asked them about the update problem and the game not starting. They stuck with me for over three hours to solve the issue, going through literally every fix they could think of. Finally, they fixed the issue and repaired my files manually, and now my updates worked. Those updates were VITAL to making Fallout 4 work. So people, make sure your Operating Systems can update to the newest version or service pack for them, those OS updates just might save your game.

For any others having the same issue try downgrading your driver by rolling back for more info here

{THE STORY}
I'm not sure if this fix will work for you but first let me get this straight you click play from the launcher and the game loads but you get a black screen for around a split second then "fallout 4 has stopped working" followed by it looking for a fix followed by close program? I have found a fix whether it works for you I do not know but let us find out I wanted to run fallout 4 on my really old laptop that I got in like 2008 that has an integrated intel gpu as it's main gpu just to see if it works and if I can change all the setting to below low just so I can play fallout 4 when i'm out and about most people just said oh update your drivers or verify the game or run in compatibility mode or as administrator but long story short none of these worked for me
{THE FIX}
The Irony of so many people saying update your driver is my fix was to do the opposite and actually rollback to an older version
[how to]
go to control panel/search "device manager"/click "display adapters"/right click and go "properties"/then lastly click rollback drivers and try now I hope this works for you
(BEFORE YOU PLAY)
also before you go I highly recommend that you go to this link if you get it working https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nU8n9Y_hGoQ its a video by a person called lowspecsgamer who runs high spec games on outdated devices by turning setting really low like grass render distance and npc render distance ! k bye hope it works

Could you please specify which file needs fixing? It would really help me speed up my own troubleshooting process! Thanks!
