Any way to change companion equipment?

I want to give Dogmeat some Dog Armor, I want to give Piper a modded 10mm Plasma imbued Pistol, etc, etc. But it seems that all I can do is put it in their inventories with no affect.

If they can equip it you'll see the "equip" button light up when you select the item in their inventory.

My dogmeat is wearing a chain collar. You have to transfer the item into his inventory and press a button to equip it. Select the item and the button should be listed at the bottom of the screen. If its equippable :P

Oh wow, I didn't even notice that. I assume they get infinite ammo so long as they have at least one bullet in their inventory (human companions that is)
