Stupid question but how do unarmed melee after picking up your first gun?

When you first fight the radroaches in Vault 111 you have to punch them, now that I picked up a gun I haven't been able to figure out how to punch

Well, the only way I found was to unequip the gun from the pipboy while he's holding it instead of just being able to do it from the favorites slots

Default is (left) alt as far as i know. Just tap it to punch and hold it down to throw equipped grenades.

Unless you already found it - When I got the baton in the vault it was fun playing wack-a-cockroach and well as later on using it for wack-a-moling and taking out those dang giant flying insects (can't spell the name without looking it up, maybe mysqitoes? or something.)

If using xbox controller it is Rb once. With grenades equipped hold Rb to chuck grenade

Wait, RB just melees with the gun, how do you quicky just go to fists (assuming meleeing with the gun damages it)

I don't think you weapon deteriorates as in previous titles (not that I've seen anyway) try unequiping your weapons, not sure I haven't tried this, why would you want to unless you doing the monk class build with added chi strike?

I was just assuming the weapon deterioates and didn't want to waste my gun's "health" on hitting stuff with it rather than shooting stuff with it
